Not judging on whether its right or wrong to do this.. but as someone mentioned, surely if they are in top spots for some keywords they must have some kind of concept of what SEO is and I'm pretty surprised your friend managed to pull off some sales, he must be quite the salesman. I'd suggest you recruit him for some real work and bank together rather than doing this.
