Gus Hansen used to have a great site (I believe it was called Poker Champs) that was 100% legit (ie. you didn't get rivered every 2nd time, and you didn't see royal flushes after every 2 hours). Of course...it went out of business...because fishes can't win on real sites - they like the excitement of winning with crap.

Poker Stars is the shittiest site there is. It's ridiculous that what they do is legal, the site is so rigged. You could mathematically keep track of the constant beatdowns to prove it (if you're a geek like me). Coincidentally, it's also the biggest site...but I wouldn't recommend it if you want to win with your skill. At least not at the levels I played...I don't know about the $100 tables.

Out of all the large sites, I like Full Tilt, I find their hands to be more realistic (although I still see far too many amazing hands to believe it's completely legit).

you obviously have no idea what you are talking about. they make rake on every hand so why risk that to cooler people like you (and how come its also losing players that this only happens to?)? i too used to think god hated me on pokerstars until i learned about horrendous mistakes i was making. 6 months after making some big changes in how i play and 200k hands later, i am seeing good profits monthly. i think the only reason people think they are being cheated is because there are 100+ hands per hour per table where live you get 25-30 hands per hour if you are going fast. so when you are playing 10 tables that is 1000 hands per hour instead of 25 so of course you will see more coolers BOTH ways. just take the variance and in the long run you will be a winner if you know how to play right

pokerstars is 100% legit. i make a lot of my monthly income from PS and always get paid when i cash out. i would recommend it.

ya totally. if you are good and play higher games, you can make a SICK amount of money! my backer so far for September is over $100,000. pretty disgusting if you ask me lol

at my uni their are a few guys who do this for a living,

They play online poker all day and make some serious cash off it.

This one guy doesn't use any of his own money its all given to him to gamble for from other people pretty crazy.

google "free full tilt bankroll". some websites give you free money to play plus you get a 27% rakeback. i would suggest playing the smaller cash games and work your way up so you dont lose it all (look to play at a level where you have 30 buyins.... so at 10NL, you would want to have around $300 or more to play and move up when you reach 25-30 buyins at the next level)

Before you sign up for any site, make sure you sign up at a site that has a rakeback program in place. You don't get it direct, you have to go through an affiliate. I play on a number of rooms, 2 best places for rakeback are raketherakedotcom and rakerebatedotnet.

If you are totally new to poker then start with sit n go tournaments. read scott fischman's book on sit n go strategy, it basically gives you a fool proof abc poker system to follow which if you don't deviate from it, you WILL be a consistent winner at low levels. Once you build your bankroll, move up levels. I would never play a sng buy in level higher than 30 buy ins (eg my bankroll is $300, then you play $10 sng's untile you get your roll up to $600 then start playing $20 sng's. If you lose, drop back down). Bankroll management is one fo the msot important elements of poker.

As for the good old "online poker is rigged!!!", it has been debated to death. These people who say online poker is rigged are bad players who don't understand the game or the industry.

Frankly I wouldn't touch anything lower than 1/2$ as the lower limits are just a 100% gambling massacre even at NL.

Dude... If you can't beat the loose players at the lower limits, you haven't got a hope in hell of beating the tight-aggressive ones at the higher

I think I'm going to give this poker thing a try. I have lost close to $150 playing poker already but I think my problem is I'm not educated enough and I think I know what I'm doing when i really do not. After loosing I told myself to forget about poker but I think If I educate myself and practice before I start playing with real money I think I can be profitable.

So if anyone has any books, informational poker sites, programs that you think will benefit us wannabe poker players please let us know

Unlike other skill games, practice doesn't make perfect with poker as each situation is independent. Its a game of observation... See how your opponent acts when s/he has certain hands and use this information to determine whether or not yours is better. There are stat tracking programs that record how your opponent plays so you can make more informed decisions (eg see how likely you are to pull off a bluff).

A good site for learning the basics is http://www.learn-texas-holdem.com.

The best way of learning BY FAR is analyzing your hand histories and seeing how you could have improved your play in certain situations. If you're new, there are poker forums (such as twoplustwo.com) where people can analyze your hands for you, most are happy to do so. There are also countless video tutorials out there that show you how to play, sites like Cardrunners require a subscription fee but if you're dedicated you will make it back in no time. Lots of books out there too, I think the general consensus is that Harrington on Holdem is the best series, definitely a recommended read (if you're savvy you can find the ebook free).

This is not true. Paying 1$ to see what's coming next could wreck you any time.

You need good bankroll management or you will never win in the long run
as even if you play really good poker sometimes the cards are against you
and you will go broke so you need a bankroll to take these hits.

Go to Poker Stars NL200 just play against the Donks and earn more than $100/hour with their AJ Preflop all-ins

Do not even think of playing online without a HUD ( heads up display). Holdem Manager is the best one IMO and they have a 45 day free trial. You can also use it to anyalize hand histories and track and graph your play. Also you will need a good training site. Deuces cracked and pokersavvy plus offer 1week free and pokertrikz dot com is all free. Make sure you get rakeback with an affiliate that also offer rakeraces. Smaller networks like Bodog and Merge are softer and easier to bet than Full Tilt and Pokerstars. I play 25nl - 100 nl depending on the site and game availability and including rakback, bonus, etc make an extra 1-2k a month .

Or, you could become a rakeback professional- these people play on sites that use the dealt method ( Cake, Full Tilt) and only play preimums and set mine. The goal here is to play as high as you can and as tight as you can- everyone dealt in the hand whether they play or not gets rakeback. This is also what makes these networks tighter and harder to play at. Google "rakeback calculator" to get an idea of how much can be earned doing this playing just breakeven poker. Boring though. And keep in mind you should be proficient playing many tables ( 15-24 ) at a time.

Like everyone's told you, you're going to need an extensive bankroll to make close to $100/hour playing poker online. I'm constantly back and forth on winnings/losses on Pokerstars these days, and I only play microlimits.
