It is, but getting this 50% skill is going to take loadz of time and in this time you will have to be focused all the time if you want to move up fast otherwise its going to take you more then 4 months to climb the ladder up to NL100. And poker is getting pretty much satured, 2+2 is giving out so many information, coaching sites are almost free, everything what brings people who play for "gambling" are bonuses ...
The game is gambling over 75% at lower levels, then it surges back to skill and lastly back to gambling at higher tiers.
I don't feel the need to justify this claim, just play 10c cash games, $5 cash games and watch the WSOP, you'll see what I mean.
However, even with low amounts of skill, as long as you have superior skill, they can't keep outlucking you.
There are more lucrative professions than poker, though. I just play in large tournaments for the lulz. Who knows, might outluck 10k players and end up with a few $100k.

if you have enough patience, you make a lot of cash playing online poker.
play at big tables ($5 - $10 an up) and just wait it out for those AA
if you play very conservative, and you on a decent table (large pots), you can make big money for every pot you win. patience is the absolute key in online poker

I won a 180 person tourney last night on joker stars that paid like $1,200.00, but the problem with that is it took me about 5 hours to finish it.
My little sister is in South America right now, doing a project cleaning climbing spots and putting in anchors and shit. The guy that founded it is a multi millionaire from online poker a lone. That is seriously all he does.
You can do it, poker is a lot of thinking also. If you don't have the brains to figure the odds stay out of it. Your luck will run out eventually.

Played poker full time for 3 years through university, still play now but nowhere near as much. It can be profitable if you do your homework and always review your hands. (if your serious, buy pokertracker, it will add many BB's per hour to your profit).
I'd have to say though, if your playing at low levels it will become a grind. Poker definitely got the better of me, I've not got the mental make up to stay cool, calm and focused long enough.

You can make a lot of $$$, there are a lot of rooms plenty of fishes... But you can also lose your money... And that is BAD!!! 
make sure you pick the right site if you really want that "50% skill/50% gambling"
Gus Hansen used to have a great site (I believe it was called Poker Champs) that was 100% legit (ie. you didn't get rivered every 2nd time, and you didn't see royal flushes after every 2 hours). Of course...it went out of business...because fishes can't win on real sites - they like the excitement of winning with crap.
Poker Stars is the shittiest site there is. It's ridiculous that what they do is legal, the site is so rigged. You could mathematically keep track of the constant beatdowns to prove it (if you're a geek like me). Coincidentally, it's also the biggest site...but I wouldn't recommend it if you want to win with your skill. At least not at the levels I played...I don't know about the $100 tables.
Out of all the large sites, I like Full Tilt, I find their hands to be more realistic (although I still see far too many amazing hands to believe it's completely legit).

i am a 100nl regular. my backer backs me for full ring cash games (though i am better at 6max) and we are working our way up to 200nl+.
its very possible to get $100/hr if you are playing at higher levels. i was averaging a little over $40/hr multitabling @ 50NL.
if you are looking to make some serious money though, i would look toward cash games. tournies are over rated. you could go months without taking one down. cash games are steady (as far as poker goes) and doesnt require much commitment to make some good money if you are skilled enough.
if you like volume, look into sit-n-go's but i hate them because luck takes my skill advantage down. i work better playing deeper stacked with people who cant play deeper stacked. sng's and tournies are based around knowing the other players range and then just shoving at the right time

I had a poker night with my friends and instead of chips we played with cash (lol). I was up $100, lost $50 in one round (sry not too savvy with poker terminology) and I pretty much went on tilt, went all in, and lost.
