undefy method?
I am trying to stay away from from elance/GaF/etc. You have to put in a stupid amount of work to bid on jobs. After that, the expectations form the buyers can be ridiculous. A man week's worth of work for $100. Plus, it does not scale. You spend a helluva lot of time bidding/preparing bids, and not actually getting work done. Even bidding for article writing work is a huge schlep.
I am brushing up on reading too. At the moment though, I need to start earning some $$ so I can stay alive, and start investing in longer term activities like AdSense. I have a few ideas, but none I can implement without ready cash. Hence the problem.

The general plan is to get to 50-100 per day, even if it takes up all my time. Once I am at this level, I can try and improve on my method of getting $$, freeing up time to effort longer term projects.
As an example, 20 microsites, at a turnon price of $20 each is $400 that I have to have lying around. :-(
About the PHP, I know enough PHP to find my way around scripts. I know enough to throw together one off use type scripts for myself. I certainly don't know enough to create a script I would be willing to unleash on paying customers though.

Seriously, though, think about this. How low do you want to go to make that 100 daily? if you're not unwilling to do just about anything then making that money shouldn't be a problem. Sometimes I wish my own morals and ethics would just shut the hell up already.
Anyway, about you. What are you willing and unwilling to do for that money?

You say you have produced some websites for friends? Read up on Site-flipping in this forum.
Then go to forums.digitalpoint.com (sign-up) and check out their Buy, Sell, Trade section. You can sell websites there, fast cheap ones to make fast money--check their Terms for details.
To make more money per site, sign up with warriorforum.com, sell websites there. It will cost you to list your sites there. digitalpoint is free to list. check out Flippa later.
Also consider buying cheap websites, fixing them up a little, then sell.

Unless I want to go and pick orders at the Amazon warehouse in Milton Keynes, December is a bad month for hiring. Nothing really meaningful will happen on the job front until the new year.
That said, if I am going to be earning minimum wage, then I'd really rather be doing so while working for myself. Or at least working on something that will ultimately upskill me enough to never have to work for anyone else again.

Day 1 update
Earnings so far - $0
I have been busy though. Wrote a few articles I am trying to flog on DP. Have had some interest.
Also in negotiation with someone here to do some article rewriting for him.
Finally, touched up an IMer I knew from a while back, and he has given me some more article rewriting work. 20 article rewritten @$1 each. About 3-400 words each.
It seems that article writing is the easiest to do for guaranteed money in your paypal when you have nothing else to invest besides your computer, and your talents.

The short plan so far is to raise enough ($100 or so), to get hosting, a couple of domain names, traffic, and then get started on CPA offers.
This will probably get to more blackhat ^^ efforts, and hopefully will find an affiliate that does do weekly payouts.
^^On a related note, can anyone recommend a good gateway to use with wordpress, so I can drive traffic to my affiliate offers?

Honestly, although IM can bring you some decent money over time, it normally isn't something that you can start on a dime and instantly make bank. Contrary to what you are saying, yes, you can get job offers - even in December. How do I know this? I just retired from the Navy and have been applying for jobs. I've had phone interviews this week for 2 different decently paying jobs ($60k+ - one of them most likely $75-80k)... and from the indications I've had from them, I should get at least one offer, if not two. (The higher paying one was talking about us talking compensation even before I have the technical interview)...
So, simply put... don't be afraid to get your butt out there and look for a JOB... that's the fastest way to make income... and more reliable. THEN work on IMing... that's my strategy - I'm hoping to make decent coin using some of these methods, but in the meantime, I have to feed the family, ya know? lol
