i m thinking of buying 100-200(may increase) domain names is there any good registrar

Name.com is cheap for only 1st year, then you got to pay more.

Buddym yes it is possible, you just need to use the nameservers your VPS provider gives to you. Don't use 1&1! From my understanding they "lock" you into their service, and technically they own the domain. I had a friend about a year ago that tried to transfer his domain away from them and they wouldn't let him. Don't know if this is still the case.

Godaddy with their everywhere upselling ads just is no go...

1&1 is Ok in terms to transfer domains from them, I never had a problem with it, but their management panel is the worst nightmare - just stay away from them.

ccc23 that is not the case, 1 and 1 does not lock you into their service, I have used them for 5 years now, and have done very well with them, you can transfer from them there is a process to do it, and its better that way because it is virtually impossible for a domain to be stolen by them. I highly recommend 1and1 as I have about 400 domains there, but I also deal with dotster and godaddy mainly because Ive acquired domains from people that have domains there.

You buy the name - you own it. (of course as long as you renew every year).

You can transfer to any other registrar if needed. If it's a new purchase the waiting period to transfer to another registrar is generally 6 months.

But I am giving you additional info that is unnecessary. - (as it pertains to a domain transfer to another registrar).

The answer to your question has been stated. Leave with your registrar and point your nameservers. That's it.

Just change the nameservers to match those of the company you are hosting with.

Ask them - they will advise exactly what to to put in your control panel of your existing registrar. Example : NS1.HOSTINGIWANT2POINT2.COM, NS2.HOSTINGIWANT2POINT2.COM

It's that simple.

I can probably help you save a couple of bucks. I would recommend godaddy.... most likely.

1&1 has the second best prices right now on the market ....BAR NONE!

But there price can change at any time without notice ( as I inquired and tried to get locked rates on 1000 names) -they can't guarantee you that. Not that any company would. - But what they are really saying to me ... is by the time you renew (1 year) ... the price may be more. That's a big thing to consider when you have many names.

I have a good way to keep this consistent with godaddy.

I'm not talking "shit" I'm speaking from experience. That was my experience with 1&1 and it sucked. 1&1 sucks. Now that's talking shit.

It just sounds so odd to me. I have never heard of such a thing.

If you register the name it is your name. - Granted, as I stated. you can not buy from one registrar and immediately move the name to another registrar.

They don't all play by exactly the same rules in terms of time. But generally this timeframe is 6 months. Other then that... there are no other restrictions that I have ever faced along the lines of what your saying and I have used several companies. Including the top companies is this area.

It's unfortunate and strange that you may have experienced anything else with 1&1. - They are very reputable ... and a simple call or email to ask for an exchange I am sure would be granted.

Generally 1&1 have a very bad rep with domainers.

Yes, if you register a domain it's kind of yours, but if your registrar won't let you access it or change the DNS because you have a dispute with them, or someone has sent them a complaint, then you're fuc*ed.

Some registrars will block all of the domains in an account if they get a spam compalaint against one domain..... godaddy has been known to do this

One of the best registrars is moniker, they will give you special pricing if you tell them you're a reseller (and pre-load an accout with a credit of $500).

basic rule - don't put all your eggs in one basket, use different registrars, have multiple accounts, don't buy hosting from a registrar, don't buy domains from a hosting company. - keeps your options open.

Of course in special circumstances go with your wallet, I've just registered about 200 infos with godaddy and am hosting them with godaddy, for $1.19 each and free hosting, it's worth a pop to see what happens. But if they begin to perform welll, and become important to me, I'll host them elsewhere.
