1 million monthly global exact domain match...

So I'm pretty new to SEO, been doing web development and design for years, but just recently decided to learn about SEO and whatnot.

So I was looking into my hobby and realized there is almost zero competition and it's actually a pretty big niche and there is an exact match domain which gets 1mil global searches per month according to google's keywords tool and the competition for that keyword search really blows (crappy non-SEO sites with horrendous design/coding), is that good? And worth buying the domain and giving it a go?

One thing that strikes me as odd is that the top websites for this niche only are getting like 1,500K hits per day, how is this possible if there are millions of searches for these keywords? Does google count youtube/video searches as part of the global monthly searches in their keywords tool? Or because these are crappy old non-maintained type sites?

if they're getting 1500k a day buy that domain. Your probably doing the research wrong and not hitting the exact search.... but its still a damn good EMD.

First, check what is the [EXACT] search count. You can change the same under "match type" settings. It is the actual REAL search count for a keyword.

How you know exactly those sites are getting 1,500K hits per day per day? The only way to find the exact hits your competitor is getting is by checking their traffic stats in GA or by gaining access to the traffic stats software they use. So it is almost impossible to find.

The search volume statistics are an approximate number of search queries that were performed on Google and the search network.
