I created a site recently in order to optimize it for a keyword, after a few days it got indexed and appreared on the top of the first page. According to google keyword tool, the keyword I selected is supposed to get 22k hits a month but even after a week, aw stats shows roughly 5 visitors a day. How can that be? I checked with a few proxies and the site is #1 everywhere.
The keyword is in my domain, as I said the site is about a week old.

    hey
try and change the description as shapsp said it above.....also avoid making your site too fancy...and just use basic html
this is coz if u r using flash and all those fancy stuffs to make ur site look good and if it takes more than 20 secs there is a probability of the searcher goin sumwhere else. and he might never return to ur site
when a site delays the user thinks its not worth watching and just moves on..
so better alter ur site...coz u have d luck man...u got it on 1st on google...
all d best for ur venture..
let us know about ur future progress..

Check the #2 and #3 sites in alexa and quantcast and see if they show up. If they do you can see what kind of traffic volume they are getting.

I agree with the other replies. If the keyword gets a lot of searches and you're #1 you should be getting at least some kind of traffic. If you're not it has to do with your site loading or your description although even with a bad description you should still get some traffic.

The #2 and #3 sites could also be getting a lot of traffic from other keywords so it would be hard to make a conclusion based on alexa and quantcast right?

    How is the competition?

Unless you have found the mythical low-hanging fruit (sometime it happens), a kw searched 22k times every month on average should have some competition.

Well, Adwords always reserve the exact information for themselves, so they can rise the bid whenever they want. The information showed is an approximation, so you can have an idea on how much to spend, but reality is that they keep the absolute truth for themselves.

Throw that keyword exact match into an adwords campaign with a few ads and uncheck google partners and just use google search and see what level of impressions there are. If there are only like 10-100 a day the adwords data was way way off. if there are hundreds a day, you know you need to optimize your description and title tag.

Never mind, I was looking on broad traffic. The exact phrase traffic isn't high.

One thing I`ve messed up myself.. I ranked #1 on G, but that didnt do any good because Wikipedia was #2.. How many here would choose some crappy, unknown domain over Wikipedia, even if Wiki is #2? Noone.. So if Wiki is #2/3/4 for your keyword, then you can just drop the entire project..

You must do very good keyword research before you start building your site, it is crutial.
On way to research the keyord is by google adwords keyword tool:
    https://adwords.google.com/select/KeywordToolExternal
you enter your targeted keyword and select the exact match when the list of suggested keywords is loaded, then you multiply every number by 20 and this is what you can expect to + - if you hit first 3 spots for that tearm...
