This is clearly some sort of ebay marketing ploy. Can someone explain how doing this helps their ebay presence?

Yeah, I thought about jacking up my own ebay ID by listing and then buying my own shit to get a high feedback score....in order to benefit from the *reported* search placement benefit you get in showing your ebay listings when you have an account with lots of sales and good DSR scores.

Obviously, I hit a brick wall when I realized that would involve losing a lot of money to listing fees, final value fees, paypal transaction fees, etc.

For instance, if I sold something to myself for $100, I'd lose
-$5 to $15 in final value fees
-$2 to $4 in paypal processing fees
-listing fee (relatively small compared to the two above)

Take the "million dollar ipod touch"

You could create fake buyer accounts, bid on it, win, and then NOT pay for it....but I don't see how that'd benefit the seller account any...

Sorry to burst your bubble, but just because someone wins the auction does NOT mean that they are going to pay for the item they 'won'.

I have a friend who makes a living selling shit on ebay and has for 7 years. He says about 5% of his sales never pay. I'm guessing that even if you somehow manage to trick someone into bidding on the auction - it doesn't mean they'll pay.

yeah.. doubt that would be happening anytime soon... maybe if it was the first ipod ever made (with proof). I remember reading about one of the first AOL CDs, the ones they used to give away long time back, went for thousands.

I wonder how they were not banned by eBay... Usually anything this large must be approved by eBay or they would remove it right away themselves. How odd!
