I think it's just a matter of anchor texts: if your "brand name" matches your exact keyword target, you can get a little more aggressive with exact keyword anchor text linkbuilding and get away without penalties.

As innocent_kid said, I've found Godaddy to have some bugs when showing availability of domains, but what you say exists and is called Domain name front running (sorry, can't link to Wikipedia entry).
