You dont need millions of links, you just need REALLY good ones. Although getting Blog reviews through Blogsvertise etc is over (or will be soon) why not find very good blogs in your niche & see if you can get them to review you, in return for links from other sites of yours, content etc? 100% agree. This is the reason the 'big boys' are dominating the market at the moment (they are mine, anyway). They go out there & get thousands of real people engaging with them & Google laps it up. Its a tough act to beat.

Instead of wondering what Google doesnt like, what about looking at the other sites & working out why Google likes them more? But I think more social media, a few press releases, & some well chosen blog reviews would work really well too.
