I have been going around in circles trying to figure this out, but you are all a LOT more knowledgable than me re SEO, so I would really appreciate some help.

My site is a large ecommerce site, 6 yrs old, PR4. It sells lets say different shoes, & I have deep linked into all the different areas, with some good, some excellent, & some not so good links. Yesterday I checked & category pages that were on the front page on the single/double, main terms (very competitive terms) are now 84. BUT the long tail versions have stayed the same. So, my rankings for ladies shoes has vanished but blue ladies shoes is the same. This has happened across all of my various category pages. My main page, & the two keyword terms have gone from 3 to 10, & 6 to 26. My page rank has stayed the same. I still have good indicators in seomoz, & the same number of links is showing up (about 4000 in total).

I havent changed the site structure, & although I had BMR links as soon as it got banned I got them all deleted. I do have a load of links from linkfromblog, many of which are Indonesian & I have bought the odd link package but nothing too shady. I have got quite a few exact anchor text links, & not so many of the long tail ones, but a random check of two of my most prolific terms show no change in ranking.

What do you think? Have I over done it? If google is putting a penalty on me surely they would penalise the page
& I would be down on ALL the searches relating to it? Aaarrggghhh!

I checked on April 23rd & I had lost about 10-20 positions for the main category Im worried about, then checked again yesterday & I had lost a further 50. Its an ultra competitive word & I amazed I ever got to the front page, so I lost about 15 positions over Christmas/Jan/Feb (competitor link building I guess), then the extra 10-20 over March/April, then the big hit. Thats pretty much how most of them went to lesser degrees.

Sorry to bump this..but I was wondering if anyone can help. Ive just checked & I have a seomoz domain authority of 58, & a page (front page) authority of 65 so surely I cant have penalties? Im on 95 for a position I was 7 for before Christmas. Its not good.

Blast your homepage with naked urls, yourdomain.com and YourDomain.com as links. Wait for the re-balance of anchor text diversity to kick in before blasting your inner pages. But they may need them as well. Use a ratio 3:1 with 3 being new links created as I noted above compared to the number of backlinks you already have.
