My rebuttal would be a bit different. Do your own optimizing until YOU figure out what works, then find someone that offers a comparable service. Learn the process, then outsource. Capiche?
The way I see it, so long as you aren't following the normal practices that everyone, their brother, mother and uncles are following you should be fine. It's when they notice abuse on a large scale that they start implementing the changes.

As deathx said, using Scrapebox would be the easiest course of action by far. If you don't already have it, go ahead and get it. It will help you in your ventures to come without a doubt.
Remove the comments code from your template and disable them within settings. Or just use Akismet to moderate them. Any of the changes will do the job.
A lot of people neglect their internal linking strategy, which is great from a competitive standpoint. Interlinking your content properly will definitely help boost your efforts across the board. As gooma said, just don't overdo it.
