Try improving (or reducing) the amount of on-page SEO your site has. If you do build more links, make sure they are good links. Don't fall for the quantity over quality.

Some good sites to link on are social networking sites (Facebook, Twitter) and bookmarking sites (Digg, Delicious). Web 2.0s aren't that bad either if you use them as your first tier. Then link bookmarks, and article directories as second tier. I've had some strong success even after the Google...

I can't say I agree with the keyword density. I personally go for 0.75% - 1% and see good results. Google's recent updates will crush sites being over-optimized like that. Just my opinion.

Pick a "free" strategy to get you off your feet and then work at it. Don't just give up if you don't see immediate results, put a lot of effort into it. However, I highly recommend investing a bit of money into a site. I did and I can say it was worth it compared to the free methods.

It won't be as strong but they technically are counted as links. Try other sources to find new, better links :)
