I've had the same problem with my site, but I also have not built any links but I have a lot of content.
I think we need links to get it moving. Social media has helped me to get some traffic at the moment.

Ads might take visitors away from your site. I also imagine it would be difficult to find an ad network that would work with you, although I could be wrong.
I think this would be hard to do. There are so many travel blogs and you need to be authentic or be lost in the crowd.
I sometimes read them but I only like the ones who are really doing it and giving me real insight and experience.
Going with someone who offers a good mix sounds a good idea.
And yes, I think probably best to be careful of PBNs. From what I've been reading over the last few days Google can hit your site hard if they catch you :(

I think its good for making backlinks. Writing original content for every link would cost a lot of time and money.
The spin variations should be unique enough for Google to index many of them.
