Very good article with some interesting insights. One of my sites' traffic crashed after the May core update. Maybe I've been naive and should start putting effort in some video links and social media interaction... And better take into account the metrics for anchor links on a per page level...

Totally agree. Two of my sites compete on the exact same keyword and the one with average content wasn't affected at all while the other with loads of unique, well written content dropped immensely.
With one of my sites I got hit pretty hard while another site competing on the same keywords didn't even blink! The site being hit hard has much better content, but very little linkbuilding whereas the other site had 2 new backlinks added every month for the last 6 months.

oh yes definitely. in its most extreme form a bunchload of websites (often WP) is hacked and pages are created with links to the hacker's site. domains hacked are usually totally not relevent with regard to topic (sometimes even from a geolocational point) but it still works. hard to beat them...
yes good point. best is to build a PBN around your main site where you can also focus solely on seo optimized content which is often not ideal for the main site. link to those and make sure you have good CTAs on your PBN to the main site.
