Start writing some relevant content that can be indexed. Then start reading. While you are getting familiar with the common SEO techniques your site will start gaining some trust due to relevant content + aging.
Nothing to figure. Probably less "real" competition

2.500.000 matches - bet you can get on #2 in less than a month - even without own domain.
Interesting question is: how many UV so you get?
Although there have been rumors about google taking alexa stats and user time into account I dont think u can "fake" this so easily.
And Google will never stop care about backlinks :D
Im making kinda the same experience...
5000 exact per month local > I am getting like 15 uv a day, actually.
I didnt go for that kw, just kinda happened and its not profitable or anything, just wanted to share the numbers.
What makes you think it does? Google clearly states that nofollow does not count at all, so why should it pass anything (PR, Anchortext, Trust). This makes no sense.
In most cases the difference is that static pages are side-wide linked while posts are only linked from their categories/archives.
So in your case I would go for a WP blog with static pages for your articles. You can still use the Blog later on to post stuff e.g. to get pages indexed etc...
