So my website ranks well on google.com but pretty badly in google.ca
if I bought a .ca domain and did some backlinking on there, would there be any trouble if both .com and .ca linked to the same content or will I get penalties from it?

weirdly enough, my site has been going up in ranking last few days...
it was hit pretty hard last month and has been slowly climbing back up since then
one of my site got penalized (-200), continued building high PR backlinks and posting original content, the penalty is slowly going away (down to -100 now after a week)
guess like some have posted, it's perhaps a test to see if it's just a junk site or a real site
check theme folder for thumb.php or timthumb.php
there was an exploit in there and these files are included in many themes
if you find them, then you will have to search pretty much all your files since with the exploit, you could add code to pretty much any file on the server
