Excuse me for being blunt, but people need to know. 99.99% of the people replying to this thread are going to fail, point blank. You hear a lot about these people who rank without backlinks or from a few web 2's. You don't hear about the 10's of thousands who try everything and barely hit page...

Did you post to any forums at all in your chosen niche? Alot of people doing your exact method seem to be doing well with forum traffic, some others not so much.

Or, you could just forgo forum traffic for the time being, it's not the end all be all of traffic generation and it's certainly not the only free method around. I believe there's one thread here where one individual didn't even use any forums to generate traffic to his website.
