4 months have passed since I purchased monthly plan. Pretty much all of the target keywords are sticking at the #1 position with little to no fluctuation. Traffic is up x3 since starting. Decided to change to a new URL/keywords. Am interested to see if the same result happens again.

I definitely get the logic behind this but why don't I just buy 1000 cheap spam backlinks to my competitors and win? SEMRush reports many of these sites are deindexed so surely that's a sign that they are being ignored already?

SEO tools are picking up the links correctly and are not detecting any issues in terms of nofollow, domain health issues. The authority of the domains linking back seems good. I am not seeing a change in ranking or seeing the domains show up in GSC which has me suspicious of things.
