I'm always surprised by how much reply rates vary. Some people are happy with 3-5%, while others regularly hit 15% or more with the right targeting and personalization.
I've gone back and forth on this over the years. Sometimes I send a quick generic request, other times I'll add a short note if it's someone I genuinely want to connect with.
A lead database loses value over time as people change jobs, companies close, and contact details become outdated. Even a well-built list can see a noticeable drop in accuracy if it's never maintained.
How often do you clean or refresh your database?
For me, it was focusing on the size of a lead list instead of the quality. A smaller, well-targeted list consistently outperformed sending thousands of messages to the wrong audience.
A cheap list with outdated or irrelevant contacts can end up costing more in wasted outreach than it saves.
Have you had good experiences buying lead lists, or do you prefer building your own?
I keep seeing people chase huge national keywords while ignoring small local markets.
For anyone doing local lead gen in 2026, are hyper local websites still worth building or has the competition caught up?
Been talking with a few local business owners lately and many still depend almost entirely on Google and Meta for leads.
Very few are building their own email lists or collecting customer data they actually control.
Do you think small businesses are underestimating the value of first party...
Not kidding. I spent days copying business names and emails by hand. It was so slow and boring. I almost quit before I even started.
One night I stayed up just to see if I could make something to do it for me.
My first version was full of bugs and froze my laptop twice. But it started working...
For two years I blamed my copy for bad outreach. Turns out the copy was fine. I was just firing it at a list that was half junk.
We kept tweaking the fun stuff like subject lines, the pitch, what day to send. That's the part that feels like progress. Meanwhile the real leak was upstream and...
That screenshot is my actual Stripe. ~$191K gross since late 2023, built solo, no investors, no team. One month touched $24K. The next, it fell off a cliff. There are plenty of months I’d rather not screenshot at all.
I’m posting it because the build-in-public version of this is almost always a...
The real flex isn’t launching the next unicorn, it’s secretly cashing fat checks from a business nobody’s ever heard of. I met a guy who basically prints cash running commercial laundry services for hospitals. Another friend bought a self storage unit for fun and now makes more than most VC...
I started out thinking being everyone’s friend would make us crush it as a team. I said yes to every little thing, avoided tough convos, and kept handing out second chances when people messed up. The chill vibe felt right for a while but it didn’t take long for things to unravel. Stuff stopped...
I used to think retention was a performance game. Hit the numbers, keep the client. Simple.
That model cost me a painful amount of money to unlearn.
Had a client a while back, solid retainer, never complained, filed mentally under safe. We hit a testing phase where results were unremarkable...
I just burned 2 full weeks cold emailing and the brutal truth is my copy was fine. My list was garbage.
I did the classic rookie move. Bought a "clean" list, loaded it into a sequence, hit send, and waited for replies like an idiot. Opens were mid, replies were dead, and bounces kept creeping...
When I was starting out I asked this exact question to anyone who’d answer it. What was the moment it clicked. The decision that flipped everything. I wanted the map.
Now I’m a few years in and someone asked me the same thing last week, and I genuinely couldn’t give them a clean answer. I went...
