Backlinks are from coupon websites and other websites that basically copy the top results of Google. I suspect that there is no backlinking strategy. There is one legit backlink from NYT from 2010, this is probably an expired domain name, or an old blog turned into a spun website.

Have a look at your competitors on similarweb.com, see which one have high bounce rate and which one have low bounce rare. As simple as that: Copy what others are doing.
