So say someone was going to use a SMS bomber to prank a friend but wanted to stay undetected. Would a proxy server be enough? Should someone use TOR? Or is good ol' McDonald's free wifi enough?

Just curious, I thought I could use gmail classic chat to send mass SMS but I no longer have that LAB for some reason. No luck in my searches for mass text sending or mass calling. Is this even possible to do without purchasing some kind of telemarketing software?
