I've been reading quite a few discussions about how SEO has changed recently, especially for smaller websites. One thing I'm curious about is whether smaller sites can still compete without spending heavily on backlinks or paid tools. For those of you managing smaller websites, what has been your biggest challenge this year? Are you focusing more on content quality, technical SEO, or building authority? Interested in hearing what has actually worked for you.

I still think that small site have a chance but I just think that you have to be choosier in selecting your keywords. using broad keywords at the start will just be a waste of time nd effort so I would use low competition long tail keywords and create content on one specific niche first. I have seen some smaller site do well with this strategy without spending to much money on backlinks or SEO tools. It is true that it takes patience but getting link before creating content does not make sense to me.

Small sites can still compete by targeting specific topics and long-tail keywords. I’d focus on useful content, solid technical SEO, and building trust rather than spending heavily on backlinks.

however, I feel that there is still hope left for small websites. the trick here lies in making smarter decision when it comes to keyword selection. targeting broad keywords right at the beginning is definitely not going to work becuz there is nothing to gain from it. What we need to do is to target some low competition long-tail keyword nd build pages focusing on only one specific niche.

"Is SEO becoming harder for small websites in 2026?" - I wouldn't say harder but more expensive. Yes.

i am focusing on content quality but also quality backlinks. for me the most hard thing is to get some good backlinks from high authority sites.

Yes, it’s definitely true that generating authentic backlinks is always tougher than writing quality content. I would suggest using niche-specific websites which get genuine traffic for establishing contacts rather than chasing high DA scores.

This is the challenging part for most SEOs. What I would recommend is to find smaller websites which are relevant to your niche and have some traffic, instead of large Domain Rating.

It depends entirely on the niche. For many, AI overviews now provide direct answers, making site visits unnecessary let alone the ranking process. However, there are still niches where investing in remains worthwhile.

I do think it has become both hard and expensive, there's not even enough traffic left for small websites to scoop. Now, you're competing against established sites and also against Google itself.

The main problem is getting google to trust a small site when larger sites also hve information on the same subject and even gud material can get stuck for months tbh

I think smaller sites can still compete by targeting specific keywords, publishing helpful content, and building authority gradually.
