I've noticed that smaller niche websites can sometimes deliver more relevant editorial backlinks than high-DR general websites.

A genuine placement with consistent organic traffic and strong topical relevance may be more valuable than chasing domain metrics alone.

What's your preference: a highly relevant niche website with moderate DR or a high DR general website with larger traffic?

I'd take the highly relevant niche website, assuming it has real organic traffic and a natural editorial placement.

DR is just one metric, and a smaller site with strong topical relevance can bring more SEO value than a big general website.

niche sites that are relevant to my category are a very important part of my link building strategy. these smaller sites are usually much more affordable and because not many people are reaching out to themm, they are often more open to the offers you make this way i can build a solid starting backlink profile by spending only around $400-500

Agree on relevance, but with small niche sites I'd first scroll through their posts from the last few months. If half of them link out to random businesses, the site is already turning into a link farm, and that relevance won't last long.

@WickednDivine, the focus should always be on getting brand mention on editorial news sites and niche website links from an article with relevant topical authority.

DR is useful as a comparison metric but it doesn’t tell you how relevant the site is or whether its audience actually matches yours.

Smaller niche websites can still offer strong editorial value when they have genuine organic traffic, relevant content, and a natural link placement. A high DR general website may have more authority, but that doesn't automatically make its links more valuable.

The actual page, its topical relevance, and search visibility matter much more than DR. A balanced mix of relevant niche placements and authority links can help build a stronger backlink profile.

I always go for a highly relevant website. DR is a vanity metric I believe. If a site is relevant and brings traffic to yours then it's ideal to get backlinks from it.

Yeah, DR just be signals, but I wouldn't ignore it completely either. as mine completed pic as their topical relevance, organic traffic, ranking keywords, backlink profile and actual editorial quality. And an balanced evaluation always beats choosing site based on dr alone.

I would prioritize an editorially relevant website with a trustworthy profile over domain metrics alone

I'd honestly pick the smaller niche site almost every time. A DR 30 link surrounded by content my actual readers care about has done more for me than a DR 70 link on a site that posts about literally everything.

If it is a smaller niche site that has organic traffic content and editorial links then i would choose that site over one with a high DR number not all sites with high DR number are placements worth putting effort into in my view topics and page quality matter most

I'd select an extremely relevant niche website with actual organic traffic.

Relevance of topic, actual traffic, and natural linking are more important for me than just having a high DR score.

Relicancy becomes the first priority, followed by the authority and DR. Instead of judging, which is better, always go with a mixed approach.

Highly relevant niche website with moderate DR is what I prefer, but if it has genuine organic traffic, quality content, and a real audience.
DR alone isn't the main metric rather a relevant editorial link brings targeted visitors, strengthen topical relevance.
So though I don't ignore high-DR sites, I prioritize relevance and editorial quality over domain metrics.

I'd take the smaller, highly relevant niche site every day. Most high DR general sites are basically paid link farms covering everything from pet food to crypto, so the link value gets diluted heavily. A DR 25 or 30 site that actually focuses on your exact topic and gets steady organic clicks moves the needle way better.

In the long run, it makes sense to stack links that are much more relevant
Snowball effect can kick in at some point

I'd usually lean toward the moderate DR niche site if its content and audience are closely aligned with my target market , a high DR doesn't guarantee that the actual page has meaningful search visibility or relevant traffic so I'd rather look at the linking page itself than rely on domain metrics alone. A relevant editorial link can also bring qualified referral visitors , which is a bonus beyond SEO. That said I wouldn't automatically rule out larger general websites if they're genuinely relevant to the audience and can give you decent exposure

I'd go for the smaller niche site if its audience actually matches what I'm promoting. There's no point getting a link from a big website if its readers have no interest in my topic. I'd still check whether the site gets real traffic before paying for a placement.
