Rank on YouTube longer than a few days

In my experience it's a combination of everything: CTR, retention, and interaction. The video with the best performance will rank higher.

I recommend you improvement on CTR and Watch time if you focus on these your other will be improve automatically

In my opinion, to maintain a high ranking on YouTube, the most important factors are still CTR and watch time/viewer retention. Likes, comments, and shares are helpful, but they are often only secondary signals. If a video continues to attract clicks from search results and retains viewers better than its competitors, it will have a much better chance of maintaining its ranking for longer. In the long run, actual viewer performance is often more important than short-term engagement spikes.
Yeah I totally agree with this statement. Ctr and watch time/user retention are the 2 main things that YouTube's Algo judges in order to push your videos and get greater reach.

If I have to prioritize metrics for long-term rankings, I probably put retention first, CTR second, and engagement third. A high CTR will not help much if viewers leave quickly. But a video that consistently keeps people watching tends to stay competitive even when it is not getting huge numbers of views.

I am interested is there a way to maintain/hold rank on a specific keyword on YouTube.

What metrics are the most important after the initial rank?
I am also aware that just by having a good video you are bound to rank higher for longer but my competitors are doing some manipulation as their views/likes don't increase (probably drop)

CTR?
Watch time?
Likes/Shares/Comments?

I know how ranking on YouTube works but I am still looking to figure out a way to maintain the ranks for a longer time, and have tried out multiple ways to do it like sending HR views, likes, shares 12-24 hours after my video reaches #1

Some of my competitors have videos that rank for days/weeks and one of the competitors leaked his analytics which showed 40-60 hourly views coming in from 'search results' with avg retention of 1:24
Maintaining YouTube rankings is more about consistency than short-term boosts. The key factor is watch time from search, if people keep watching a good portion of your video, it holds position. CTR matters too, but only if retention is solid. That’s why some competitors with flat metrics still rank they have stable CTR and retention from search, often with consistent hourly traffic. Artificial boosts might work short-term, but don’t hold without natural behavior.

In practice, it comes down to strong content + proper SEO setup. Good keyword targeting and CTR optimization are what usually keep rankings stable over time.

From what I have seen watch time and viewer satisfaction seem to matter more after the initial push A video with steady search traffic and decent retention often holds rankings longer than one that gets a temporary spike from engagement signals alone

however, the beginning of the week is always tricky for me since the video can gain momentum but eventually settle down. in order to know whether it has the potenttial to remain ranked for a long time i will observe how the search traffic interacts with the video after all the hype disappears.

Use microworkers, ask them to type the kws you are targeting then to scroll and click on your video, then ask them to watch it till the end. You will outrank everybody else, but as soon as you stop doing this your video will tank.

use vidIQ's 30-day free trial to add targeted tags, then schedule uploads at 12 pm PST for at least three weeks; I saw a 2-day lift to 150 % retention after 14 days
