I am interested is there a way to maintain/hold rank on a specific keyword on YouTube.

What metrics are the most important after the initial rank?
I am also aware that just by having a good video you are bound to rank higher for longer but my competitors are doing some manipulation as their views/likes don't increase (probably drop)

CTR?
Watch time?
Likes/Shares/Comments?

I know how ranking on YouTube works but I am still looking to figure out a way to maintain the ranks for a longer time, and have tried out multiple ways to do it like sending HR views, likes, shares 12-24 hours after my video reaches #1

Some of my competitors have videos that rank for days/weeks and one of the competitors leaked his analytics which showed 40-60 hourly views coming in from 'search results' with avg retention of 1:24

To maintain a YouTube ranking longer, focus on improving CTR, watch time, and genuine engagement like likes, comments, and shares.

I think engagement is the key now for Youtube growing.

To maintain youtube rank, strong CTR, watch time and engagement matter most. Short term spikes fade but consistent retention and genuine interaction hold your position longer.

Yes, what always happens with my short videos is that they rank first for the first few days and get a lot of views, but then they disappear from the rankings in the following days.

The main factors for YouTube are: interaction with content (likes, comments, and adding to playlists), and viewing time.
It is better to use external sources of views from social networks. For some reason, YouTube likes them the most.

If you want real stability, you need steady search traffic that behaves well. When users who find you through the keyword actually stay and watch, youtube keeps you parked near the top. Anything artificial can push you up for a moment, but only natural retention from search, you there over time.

There's no such guarantee to maintain rankings. There's a lot of randomization involved these days. You can hold your rank for a few days and maybe not. It mostly comes down to luck.
comments themselves are randomized these days, so it does not matter if you buy 1000 likes on a comment to make it rank. When trying to rank by "top comments", YouTube uses a mix of top comments + comments that barely have likes. They randomize the sorting.

Whether you get to hold your rank on search for long or not, is completely up to youtube. They can randomly select channels based on good engagement metrics and rank them. but they also reserve the right to remove that ranking or randomize search results at any time.

They introduced this element of "randomization" as a defense mechanism to prevent people from gaming the system.
To be more accurate - YouTube injects stochastic variation into rankings to prevent predictable manipulation, so two similar videos won’t have identical ranking trajectories.

The only way around this is, if you find a specific service or exploit that works. The other ways in which this is possible is mentioned in my next response below.

your competitors could be ranking for multiple reasons:

● They got lucky and youtube randomly selected their channels to be the ones that will rank for a while.
● They have a specific exploit or method (maybe smm) that helps them do this consistently.
● They have tons of accounts that they spam such videos to. This is a good method because different channels will be treated with different levels of luck/trust score. So uploading videos to multiple aged accounts can help increase your probability of success, where one channel could be the lucky lottery ticket winner, if randomly selected by youtube for longer ranking durations. It may not be that your competitors are consistently ranking on every channel they upload on. It may just be that you happen to notice their channels that actually make it through or "survive" (survivorship bias).

If your video keeps getting recommended alongside similar content it reinforces watch time and engagement metrics, which helps sustain your ranking for the target keyword longer.

Appreciate the only non-ai reply in this thread, from my research I also thought the same (luck is a big factor) but came on here to see if anyone has any insights. I suppose even if they did they wouldn't be telling me here

Best method is hire microworkers to watch and like your video. It will stay in the top3 until you stop doing this

Keeping a keyword position on YouTube usually comes down to steady engagement signals rather than big boosts. A lot of channels hold rankings by maintaining stable CTR and consistent watch time every day, even if the numbers are small.

even with steady engagement there is no guarantee of ranking, or else everyone would just be gaming the system. youtube has already put an end to that.
the results have some randomization involved.

Straight-to-the-point YouTube ranking breakdown and what really matters after the initial ranking wave

Maintaining a spot on a YouTube keyword really depends on keeping steady signals rather than a one-time boost. From what I’ve seen, consistent search-driven views and stable retention seem to matter most, so keeping that flow alive usually helps the ranking stick longer.

If you want to hold your rank longer, the key is steady real views and good retention, not short-term tricks or fake engagement.

After initial push YouTube cares about retention and session time from search. If people click and watch most of the video it will stick longer.

Fake views wont help if real users drop fast so focus on CTR and strong first 30 secs.

Forget bulk sygnals, long-term rank requires sustained user intent replication. Force deep interaction paths like exact-match keyword search journeys coupled wth secondary comment engagement. Sygnal utility, not just raw volume.
