How much risk is too much?

It will gonna let you know on first day of the 2nd month

For experienced SEOs, how do you decide when an aggressive SEO method isn't worth risking an established site?
Google penalty could destroy established income. If your site is already generating stable revenue, there is no need to use aggressive, high-risk tactics.

Test aggressive methods on throw away websites and use what works on money sites...this is the safest way.

For me, it’s too much when one bad outcome could wipe out everything I’ve built. There should always be room to recover.

If the site already makes good money i become pretty boring with seo. I’d rather test aggressive stuff on another domain than risk something that already works. Once you have something to lose, the risk reward changes a lot

After the site starts earning money i no longer consider it an experiment because any bold step must offer some benefit to compensate for the risk to pages that were bringing in potential customers.

Disagree with framing it as how aggressive the method is. The better test is whether you can undo it. On page changes, redirects and content swaps can be rolled back and a site usually recovers. Links pointing at the main domain can't, because you can't take down links on other people's sites, you can only disavow and wait. So anything with a delayed penalty and no way back stays off an established site. Test it on a throwaway domain first, and remember a throwaway has less trust, so it will break sooner than the real one would. If the downside is permanent, it's not worth it.

it comes down to the downside if things go wrong. On an established site with steady traffic I’d be much more cautious because recovering from a penalty or losing rankings can cost far more than the potential gain.
