How can you make designs look clean and simple while still keeping them effective?

I pick one main thing people should look at first, then remove anything that does not help it. To stop it feeling plain, I use good spacing, one strong font and one accent color, so a simple design still looks finished.

I usually stick to 2–3 colors, clear fonts and one main thing I want people to notice, then remove anything that doesnt help the message.

keep it simple by using plenty of whitespace, stick to two or three complementary colors and let hierarchy guide the eye while dropping any element that doesn't serve a clear purpose so the design stays clean yet effective

Generally, simplicity in design is always better. Having visual hierarchy and consistent use of colors makes it easy for people to understand the message conveyed.
