Hello, hope you're all well

I’m looking to start running Meta ads for a Onlyfans model and trying to decide whether it’s worth learning/running them myself initially or hiring an experienced media buyer from the start.

My main reason for considering doing it myself is that I’d like to properly understand Meta ads rather than being completely dependent on an agency/media buyer. I’m fairly technical/data driven and already manage a lot of the other acquisition/analytics side of the business.
I have an onlyfans api pixel so that should help if I decide to run it myself

On the other hand, I appreciate that an experienced buyer who has spent serious money on Meta will understand how to hit the right audience and should have a higher return on investment.

Would you recommend learning and running the first campaigns myself, hiring a media buyer immediately, or learning the basics while having an experienced buyer manage the account?

I would highly suggest you to go with the third option. Understand the basics first and learn, and then use an experienced buyer to manage the initial campaigns.

And since you have said you already have the technical knowledge, you can pick up the campaign structure, keywords, and optimization, and how the buyer is doing very fast.

But the most important part of learning Meta is usually figuring out what actually doesn't work with real money. For onlyfan + meta model, I would pay close attention to the creatives, compliance, how they track, and the funnel. It's not about only CTR or cheap traffic.

You can ask the buyer to explain the decisions and data while managing it, and after a few testing cycles you can understand much better to continue or whether do it by yourself.

Thanks a lot for the reply, really helpful and good points.

I thought this is probably the best approach, I'm going to try pick up what I can from them whilst running my own campains and optimising on the side. Then if I match their returns or get close then I can look at taking it in house once I have learnt it.

Thanks again

If you have a good media buyer available let them handle the first campaigns while you learn alongside them, You’ll get real data and still understand how everything works.

If you’re comfortable with data, learn the basics and run a few small tests yourself because that gives you a better idea of what works before spending money on a media buyer.

Yes, having someone experienced manage the first campaigns while you study the data sounds like a good balance, so just make sure the account and tracking remain under your control.

I would learn the basics and start with a small test budget but check Meta’s adult-content policies because an experienced buyer can help later once you understand the numbers.

I’d learn the basics while working with an experienced media buyer. You’ll understand the data and strategy without wasting too much budget on trial and error. Just make sure the creatives and landing pages comply with Meta’s adult-content advertising policies.

If you’re already comfortable with analytics and starting with a small test budget could be useful, also just check Meta’s advertising policies first as adult-content promotion has strict restrictions.

My advice would be to invest some time in learning before spending heavily because good tracking is useful, but campaign strategy matters too.
