Backlinks in 2026 — Does white-hat quality still outperform quantity?

Hey everyone,

I've been noticing that the backlink landscape has shifted quite a bit after Google's recent core updates. Some are saying a handful of high-authority, relevant backlinks now outperforms bulk link building, while others are still relying heavily on PBNs and mass guest-post networks.

Would love to hear the community's real-world experience on a few things:

  1. What's your current go-to backlink strategy — white hat, gray hat, or a mix?
  2. Are PBNs still worth the risk, or are safer alternatives (HARO, guest posting, digital PR) giving better ROI these days?
  3. Has anyone noticed ranking drops or gains tied to a recent Google update?
  4. Does raw domain authority still matter as much, or has topical relevance taken over as the bigger ranking factor?

Genuinely interested in hearing what's working (or not working) for people right now — success stories and failed experiments both welcome.

Thanks in advance!

I've had better log term results with relevant, authority links than volume. Topical relevance and natural link profile seem to survive updates much better than risky shortcuts.

Quality is subjective and changes over time to fit in the market demand. So, quality is always better than quantity regardless of time period. Currently, niche relevance, traffic, and author's credentials on the topic matter more than third party metrics.

Not quite sure what works well, but press releases are useless. I had one PR go live on dozens of sites (including AP News, NatLawReview, EIN Presswire), and only one got indexed.

HARO is just too much hassle. Requiring headshots, job titles, LinkedIn, etc...

From what I've seen, a few relevant, high-quality backlinks outperform a large number of random ones. Relevance has become more important than chasing metrics alone.

Yes quality links will always prevail and need to be relevant links

Agreed — that shift from "chase the metric" to "chase the relevance" is probably the biggest mindset change in link building over the past couple of years. A DA 60 link from a completely unrelated niche just doesn't carry the same weight it used to, and Google's gotten a lot better at spotting that mismatch. Quality + relevance together seems to be what actually moves the needle now.

Topical relevance has given me better results than chasing high metrics. A few quality, niche-relevant backlinks usually outperform a large number of generic ones.

Topical relevance has completely taken over domain metrics like DA or DR. A link on a relevant DR30 page with real traffic is far more valuable than an irrelevant DR80 link from a generic network. Google's systems are incredibly accurate at detecting and discounting pattern-based link schemes. Safe, editorial-based tactics like digital PR and niche guest posts are the only ones offering consistent ROI.

I've moved toward a quality first approach. A few relevant, authoritative backlinks consistently outperform large volumes of generic links in my experience.

From my experience, topical relevance and link quality have become more important than sheer volume. A few strong, relevant backlinks can be more valuable than hundreds of random ones.

mix of both is what most serious SEOs are running, pure white hat is too slow for high comp niches and pure blackhat burns too many sites.

For me it's mostly a mix leaning white hat: niche relevant guest posts and editorial mentions, a few strong links a month rather than volume In some niches like iGaming you still see PBNs and bulk links ranking, but the churn is high and yo re always one update away from rebuilding.

The two things that sem to mater most now are topical relevance of the linking site and whether the linking page gets any real traffic itself. A link from a page with organic visitors beats three DR70 links from sites that only exist to sel posts. I also keep anchors mostly branded or URL and pace things so the profile grows naturally.

in 2027 backlinks are just about quality, old days have gone and when people just used to make spammy links and get traffic, now google much focus on releveny, traffic and quality of website then you get traffic

I’ve found that relevance and placement matter more than simply increasing link volume. A few links from genuinely relevant sites can make more sense than a large number of unrelated placements. Is this conversation helpful so far?
Yeah, I have had the same experience as well. Some relevant context-based links often work better than a bunch of non-relevant links that do not fit in at all.

PBNs are not safe. Back then it was good but nowadays guest posting will give you very good ROI if you do it consistently and on relevant high authority sites. And i think domain authority nowadays doesn't matter that much now because in these days people can manipulate their site's da.

PBN traffic will still does well as long as foot prints are well hidden but one gud contextual backlinks from an real authority site is much more effective since the update.
