Does the first hour really decide how far a Reddit post goes?

I have noticed that some posts either pick up quickly or seem to disappear despite getting decent engagement later. it makes me wonder how important those first few interactions actually are.

Is early engagement mainly about timing and subreddit activity or are there other factors that determine whether Reddit continues giving a post visibility?

The first few interactions can give a post a good start, but I wouldn’t focus too much on the first hour. Try posting when your subreddit is active and make the content something people naturally want to discuss.

Initial interactions act like a "rocket boost" that launches a post into the "New" category; however, to soar high and remain in orbit—reaching "Hot" status—the post must maintain a high level of engagement, spark substantive discussion, and align with the community's pace at that moment.

Good timing can help, but a post that people genuinely want to discuss has a better chance of continuing to get attention. If something gets decent engagement later but still stops gaining visibility, there are probably other factors involved besides those initial interactions.

I think the first hour matters but it’s not the only thing. Early votes, comments and how relevant the post is to the sub can all affect whether it keeps getting shown. Timing helps but a strong post can still pick up later.
