Are niche-relevant backlinks becoming more important than high-authority links?

I have been comparing link-building results across a few projects and noticed that highly relevant links sometimes outperform stronger links from unrelated sites. For those running SEO campaigns at scale, what are you prioritizing now: domain authority, topical relevance, traffic or a combination of these?

I think topical relevance is the cleaner signal. Authority still matters, but more as a multiplier after the link already makes sense in context. A strong unrelated link can move things, but it usually has to fight the mismatch first.

DA/DR can be useful for filtering, but I wouldn’t treat those numbers as the main signal. They’re third-party metrics, so a high score alone doesn’t tell you whether the link is actually relevant or useful for the page you’re trying to rank

For large-scale link building, topical relevance plus the quality of the actual linking page probably tells you more. Traffic is a nice extra check too, but even that can look impressive while coming from completely unrelated keywords

So I’d use authority metrics as one part of the picture, not the thing that decides everything

Relevance and the quality of the content matter a lot. I usually look at relevance, traffic, content quality, and authority together before publishing the content.

Filtering is about all I use DR for these days. It is a domain average, and the page is what gets crawled, so it tells me where to look, not what I found.

On the page itself I want two things: does it rank for anything of its own, and how many other links is it sharing. I have watched a DR 25 page with three outbound links do more for a client than a DR 70 sponsored section running forty.

Are you pulling the linking page's own traffic, or only the domain's?

I meant the linking page’s own traffic, not just the domain total

Domain traffic is useful as a quick sanity check, but it can hide a lot. A strong domain can still have pages with zero visibility, while a lower-DR page can rank for relevant terms and actually get seen

So page-level traffic/rankings first, then domain metrics more as context

Relevance first, then whether the page itself has been updated recently. A page sharing three links is still worthless if nothing has been published on that site since 2022 and the contact address bounces. Ive found plenty like that. Form still works, submission still goes through, nobodys read one in years.

Same read here. The extra column I keep is whether that page level traffic has anything to do with the topic it is linking out about. A lot of pages pull respectable numbers off one old post that went wide years ago, so the traffic is genuinely there and the relevance is not.

This is the check most vetting sheets leave out, and it is the cheapest one to add. Last publish date on the site, not on the page. Nothing has gone up since 2022 means the crawler has already learned it does not need to come back often, and your link sits there waiting to be noticed. I sort aged candidates on that before I look at any third party score, because it is the one thing on the list Google can see directly.

prioritize topical relevance and actual organic traffic first, then use authority as a supporting metric

relevance first then traffic DA comes in third honestly at this point plenty of case studies floatin around showin unrelated high da links doin basically nothing while a handful of relevant mid tier links moved the needle noticeably faster.

check few things before publishing how relevant the site its traffic content quality and overall authority.looking everything together gives better idea than focusing on just one metric

yeah relevance and content quality matter a lot.check the relevance traffic content and authority together before deciding if a site worth publishing on
