Which is currently the best affordable backlink checker tool? Is Ahrefs worth it? Or SEMRush does an equally good cheap at a cheaper price?

Still, when it comes to backlinks, Ahrefs cannot be beat, although if budget is an issue, Semrush should be your choice because it offers more SEO tools. If you just need basic backlink information, cheaper tools might suffice.

If you are looking for only a backlink tool, I will strongly advise using ahref provided that you have the budget. If you want to use a full SEO tool, I will suggest you semrush becuz it is cost-effective.
 
Ahrefs is still one of the better options if backlink data is your main priority but it can be expensive for smaller projects SEMrush is a good alternative with more all in one features so i’d compare the backlink limits and pricing of the plans you’ll actually use before choosing

IMO, ahrefs is good and better sometimes Semrush has less data than Ahrefs.

Are you just wanting to check your own sites backlinks, or be able to export backlink profiles of 3rd parties? If it's the former, then an Ahrefs free account will do that for you, you just need to add your properties to the tool.

I want to check the backlinks of my competitors.
 
Ahrefs still has the most comprehensive index for backlink analysis, but Semrush offers a broader overall SEO toolkit for a similar price. If budget is a tight constraint, tools like SE Ranking or Majestic are solid, affordable alternatives specifically for backlink checking.
 
tested both side by side a while back and ahrefs consistently found more backlinks that semrush missed so if backlink accuracy specifically is the priority ahrefs wins,
but semrush is the more well rounded cheaper option if the budget only allows one tool.
