yeah i totally agree that followers don’t mean much if they don’t engage because real engagement matters more than big numbers.
A follower number may be very impressive but in real totally unengaging. my preference is to have 1 k followers who will understands my message and return again and again rather than 10k followers who does nothing after following me.I keep seeing accounts with 10k, 50k, even 100k followers getting almost no likes, views, or comments
From what I’ve seen, follower count is becoming more of a vanity metric than a real growth signal.
Instagram seems to care much more about:
- Reel retention
- saves
- shares
- comments
- rewatches
- audience quality
A 3k account with strong engagement can outperform a 50k account full of dead followers.
Fake followers and low-quality SMM panel followers might make the profile look bigger, but they usually damage reach because the audience does not interact.
My current opinion:
Curious what others are seeing in 2026. Are follower numbers still helping with social proof, or is engagement the only thing that really matters now?
Having many followers on ur profile is likely to make your profile look crowded but not necessarily to compensate for poor quality content.I keep seeing accounts with 10k, 50k, even 100k followers getting almost no likes, views, or comments

To be honest i will see followers as the number at the entrance not the proofs that my store is popular. It sould be much more valuable for me to have a small account with people who interacts with me.I keep seeing accounts with 10k, 50k, even 100k followers getting almost no likes, views, or comments

Number of followers serves more as sociall proof rather than the quality of the page. i could go for engagement per post and if the people returns to engage with the page this says a lot more about the page.I keep seeing accounts with 10k, 50k, even 100k followers getting almost no likes, views, or comments

Curious. I have had no luck with instagram. I now realize the content is important, but I am failing to see what qualifies as good content. Videos rank high, other than that I cannot fugure it out, I realize high quality photos help. I get lots of likes, forward requests, but little in followers. No sales! With the same content running on Pinterest, sales happen, and a fair bit of sales? Instagram nothing.I agree and dont agree at the same time.
I run a lot of pages and also have quite a lot of friends with huge pages.
If you built a large following in the business niche for example and the quality of your content decreased significantly over the years or you stopped posting for a long time, then yes you could have 600k followers but get a few k views, but if you have remained active, everything is clean and you dont have any visibility issues + over the years you have learned what works, how to increase retention etc than you will outperform someone with a lesser following than you in the same niche. For example I have a page with over 2M followers, anything I post on that page explodes, because the page is active and the following is engaged. I also have other pages in the same niche with like 200k followers, the posts still perform well but nowhere near the level of the larger account.
So what I am trying to get at is if you have built an engaged following, remained active then followers play a large role, if you let your page die, did not improve content or replicate what works or switched the page niche, then followers become less valuable.
Content is king though and you can go extremely viral even with 10s of followers, so yeah at the end of the day understanding page trust and content creation/virality is the most important thing.
Also yes fake followers are only any good if your goal is to just run paid ads and want to look established, if you are focusing on organic growth they do more harm than good, fake followers lead to low engagement rate which leads to lower reach.
