I think rankings can stay stable for a while even if some authority signals weaken, especially if the page still matches search intent well. I’d be curious whether people notice traffic or impressions changing before the actual rankings start to move.

A site can lose authority without immediately losing rankings, rankings depend on multiple factors, including relevance, content quality, backlinks, trust & user signals, if those factors remain strong, the site may maintain it's positions despite a decline in authority

I concur with the previous statement. A fall in authority metrics alone is not necessarily cause for losing rank positions. A page with well developed topic coverage, accurate fulfillment of searcher's intent, and a history of gaining trust may still rely on those factors for its high ranking even if there is a reduction in link-related authority. Basically, while having authority is definitely an advantage, there are very few situations where being authoritative is the only reason that a page is kept visible.

Absolutely. The loss of one high-quality, relevant link may be more critical than the loss of 20 low,quality links. I would assess the quality of the link and the other authority factors of the page before determining that the rankings have been affected.
I agree. It is hard to know for sure when a website has actually lost authority because third party scores are only estimates. As long as the content remains highly relevant and satisfies search intent better than competing pages rankings may stay stable even if the site loses some link value.
