The website can lose its authority without an accompanying decrease in ranking. Because other ranking factors such as relevancy of content and trust could continue to support its rankings when the loss of authority.

How do you exactly know when your site has lost its authority?

Anyway, what matters is your competition for the same keywords. In theory, if there's so much gap between your site and your competitors, you could lose some authority while maintaining your site ranking. But that is actually hard to estimate. People only know they've lost some authority when they lose some rankings, not the other way around.

Definitely ! It's not DA/DR that matters. The biggest indicator is that the site has lost traffic. A DA/DR value gained through natural growth and quality traffic means the highest value. No matter what it is out of 100.

Authority metrics from third-party tools are just estimates anyway.

If your content perfectly answers the search query and users trust it, your rankings can absolutely hold steady even if an SEO tool shows an authority drop. It just goes to show that relevance and intent match will often beat out raw link power.

the loss of authority is seen first by diminished impressions, broken connection or competing websites. It take some time for rankings to become consistent since all the signals do not instantly get a response from google.

I think this is possible because Google looks at many signals. A site can lose some authority but still perform well with useful and trusted content.

I don’t think losing a few backlinks will always hurt rankings. It also depends on how good those links were and how strong the page is.

absolutely. just bcz u lose some authority does not automatically lead to losing your rankings. good content nd relevance can maintain them for quite a while. this is y i believe that link buillding should go along with having a decent website.

Also depends what you mean by authority. If you’re talking DR/DA, those are third-party metrics, so they can drop while Google rankings stay exactly the same.

Yes, that can happen. Authority metrics can drop because of lost links or changes in the referring domains while rankings stay stable because relevance, content quality, trust and user signals are still strong. That’s why a drop in DR or similar metrics doesn’t always mean the rankings will drop too.

Definitely. Organic traffic, relevancy, and natural growth are what count much more than just a high DA/DR value alone.

That’s it. The relevance and search intent matter a lot more than just the authority metrics.

Exactly right. Changes in authority will manifest in impressions and competitiveness prior to showing in rankings, as it takes time for Google to consider all those factors.

Exactly. The rankings are based on a number of signals; hence, high relevance and quality content could sometimes compensate for low authority.

Yes, sure. But what kind of authority are you referring to? SEMrush, Ahrefs, or Google authority. We don't know the exact authority score of Google...

this is exactly the point. Becuz in case if we speak about the true google authority, then it is impossible to quantify it using any publicly available number . I will consider not only the ranking but also performance nd impression

Exactly. Performance comparisons between new topic pages and existing pages can indicate whether the site’s strength is increasing or not.

Right. DR and AS are just third-party ratings. Real Google power is revealed in the steady ranking and traffic.

A website can lose authority without losing rankings as strong content relevance and trust can continue to support its position.

Yes possible. SEO is not based on a single metric, so other signals can cover the loss temporarily.

Right. Page ranking is not only based on authority it could be high due to its relevance, quality, and users trust.

That's right. SEO is based on a multitude of metrics, hence good results in other aspects might balance out the decrease in another one.

Agree, loss of authority doesn't automatically translate into lower rankings. Impact depends on strength of the lost signals and how competitive affected pages are. Search rankings based on combined strength of multiple signals rather than authority alone.
