Do Social Media Comment Backlinks Still Have Any SEO Value in 2026?

Tested this on two sites last year, comment links brought a bit of traffic but rankings moved zero, treat them as a traffic play not an SEO play.

Stopped treating social comment links as an SEO tactic ages ago. For rankings they're dead, nofollow/UGC, Google ignores them. But as a traffic source they still work if you post in the right communities. I've had random Reddit comments send more converting traffic than some of my DA50+ guest posts. It's not about link juice anymore, it's about putting yourself where your audience already is.

Yes!
Any backlink on legit websites help with SEO because it tells google that if it wasn't removed from such moderated platforms that means it is legit.

Also it will bring free traffic :)

I think that's a useful distinction. Two comment links can look similar from an SEO perspective but bring completely different results depending on where they're placed and who actually sees them. If a comment is genuinely relevant to the discussion and sends interested visitors, I'd consider that more valuable than dropping links everywhere just to increase the number of backlinks. It would be interesting to compare referral traffic, engagement and conversions alongside rankings, because rankings alone probably don't show the full picture.

I was reviewing one of my older projects and realized something interesting. the pages that received the Most engagement from Social Media Comments were not necessarily the ones that gained better rankings. Some brought decent referral Traffic, while others did almost nothing, even though the number of comment links was similar.

It made me wonder if we have been measuring the wrong thing all along. Instead of asking whether these Backlinks pass SEO value, should we be looking at the quality of the audience they bring?

Has anyone here compared social media comment backlinks against other low-cost link-building methods using real data? I'm interested in hearing recent Experiences, whether the Results were positive or completely disappointing.
Comment links works better for traffic than SEO for me. a hand full of relevant comments that actually gets people coming to the site were better than 100 profile or comment links just sitting there.
