While auditing my competitors’ backlink profiles, I noticed they have links placed on the homepages of many websites. However, these links aren’t visible on the page and can only be found by checking the HTML source.

How are they do this? Is there a name for this technique, and does anyone offer this kind of service?

As far as I know, they don't just sell backlinks; they sell login credentials for these sites.

this has happened to me as well. in case the link is not visible to the users i would not rely on it as a good backlink strategy. it might be an invisible link or it might even be code. i would look into the HTML code around the link and see if google crawls it or considers it valuable before repllicating this strategy.

Yeah, I don’t think it’s a good long-term strategy either. But the fact is, the sites using these links have reached the top of Google in a very short time. This probably isn’t sustainable, right?

They can make the links hidden by setting the height of the content to 0 via css.
There are 3 ways they could be doing it.
1) They own the site
2) they are buying the homepage links.
3) they are hacking the vulnerable sites and placing the links.
3 is most likely as hacker use this technique to keep having their homepage links without getting noticed.

You can report this to the site owners and to google.

what @IM Dude said about the CSS being set to 0 to hide the links most likely the provider is injecting these links using a script through bought/hacked webshells

Indeed, the use of hidden link on home pages usually indicates an element of risk. nnetheless, while competitors achieve high rankings through these link it does not necessarily mean that they rely on these link to succeed.
