I have been in marketing for over ten years now. Different industries, different clients, different roles. But if you asked me six months ago how I was doing, I would have told you honestly, not great. I was going through one of the toughest stretches of my life, financially and otherwise. Work had slowed down, money was tight, and there were days I genuinely did not know how things would work out.
And in the middle of all that, I decided to start my own thing.
Southeast Asia has always had a hold on me. The food, the culture, the chaos and calm that exist side by side, the way every country in that region feels different from the next, even though they are neighbors. I have wanted to build something around that passion for a long time. So when everything else in my life felt uncertain, I figured, why not now? If I waited for the "right time," I would probably still be waiting.
It is not WordPress. I have used WordPress for years and know my way around it well, but this was something different. Still, it did exactly what I needed at that moment. It gave me a way to actually get started instead of sitting around waiting for money I did not have.
That one free domain-and-CMS combo is basically the reason this whole thing exists today. Sometimes you do not need the perfect setup. You just need something good enough to begin.
Once I had clarity on those pieces, I used them to build out prompts and content direction that matched the voice and audience I had defined. It made the actual content creation process much smoother later on because I was not guessing. I had a direction to follow.
I also want to be upfront about something. I used Claude to help me write everything properly, from shaping the posts to keeping the tone consistent across the site. Coming from a marketing background, I know how much a clear structure and the right words matter, and Claude has genuinely helped me get that right without needing to hire a writer I could not afford at the time.
I want to give credit where it is due. BlackHatWorld has been a huge part of this journey. The community here is genuinely one of the best places to learn, whatever stage you are at. It pushes you, it motivates you, sometimes it makes you feel jealous of other journeys , and there is an endless amount of knowledge floating around if you are willing to dig for it.
I also want to thank the service sellers who have offered free review copies along the way. I have leaned on those quite a bit while I get this off the ground, and I do not take that for granted. Once I am in a stable financial position, I plan to go back and properly pay for those services. That is a promise to myself as much as anything.
What has surprised me even more is how well the site is showing up in AI citations. That is not something I planned for specifically, but it is a good sign that the content is structured in a way that both search engines and AI tools find useful and trustworthy.
My original plan was to eventually turn this into a full-service agency. That is still the long-term goal. But building a proper agency needs real investment, and I am not there yet. So for now, I am holding off on that bigger vision and focusing on something more immediate.
The current site is turning into my testing ground. It is where I am learning what works, what my audience actually responds to, and how to build something people keep coming back to. My plan is to keep growing this platform and build a real audience around it first. Somewhere down the line, once I have the resources and the right footing, I will likely start a separate platform dedicated solely to the agency side.
It has not been easy, and there is still a long way to go before this becomes something that pays the bills on its own. But watching that traffic graph climb, seeing real people from real countries land on something I built from nothing, that keeps me going on the days it feels slow.
This is just the beginning of the story, not the end of it. I will keep sharing updates as things move forward.

The Funny Part: I Had No Money to Even Start
Here is the part that still makes me laugh a little. I wanted to build a travel platform, but I did not have enough money to even buy a domain, let alone hosting. I kept telling myself I would start once things got a bit better financially. But then, almost out of nowhere, I came across a platform that was giving away a free .com domain along with a built-in CMS.It is not WordPress. I have used WordPress for years and know my way around it well, but this was something different. Still, it did exactly what I needed at that moment. Laying the Groundwork Before Writing a Single Post
Before I touched the website itself, I spent time thinking through the basics. Positioning, tone of voice, who I was actually writing for, what kind of persona would resonate with that audience. This is stuff I do for clients all the time in my regular marketing work, so it felt natural to apply the same process to my own project.Once I had clarity on those pieces, I used them to build out prompts and content direction that matched the voice and audience I had defined. It made the actual content creation process much smoother later on because I was not guessing. I had a direction to follow.

Building It, One Post at a Time
After the groundwork was done, I built the platform and started publishing. Nothing fancy, just consistent work. Write a post, optimize it, go back to older posts and improve them, fix things that weren't working, and tweak based on what I was seeing. It has been a slow, steady grind rather than a big overnight thing.I want to give credit where it is due. BlackHatWorld has been a huge part of this journey. What the Numbers Are Telling Me
I have been keeping a close eye on Google Search Console, and honestly, it has been encouraging to watch. Clicks and impressions have been climbing steadily, especially in the last month or so, with the growth line rising noticeably. Traffic is coming in from a good mix of countries, with the United States leading, followed by Singapore, Thailand, Australia, and India. That spread feels right for a Southeast Asia-focused platform with a global audience interested in the region. What has surprised me even more is how well the site is showing up in AI citations. That is not something I planned for specifically, but it is a good sign that the content is structured in a way that both search engines and AI tools find useful and trustworthy.
Figuring Out the Money Side
Here is where I am right now, honestly still figuring things out. The growth in traffic is great, but I have not cracked monetization yet, and that is the piece I am actively working through. My original plan was to eventually turn this into a full-service agency. That is still the long-term goal. But building a proper agency needs real investment, and I am not there yet. So for now, I am holding off on that bigger vision and focusing on something more immediate.

Where This Leaves Me
I will not pretend I have this all figured out. I started this with no money, a free domain, and a decade of marketing experience as my only real asset. Six months in, I have a growing platform, decent traffic, a community that has taught me a lot, and a much clearer sense of where I want to take this next.It has not been easy, and there is still a long way to go before this becomes something that pays the bills on its own. But watching that traffic graph climb, seeing real people from real countries land on something I built from nothing, that keeps me going on the days it feels slow.
