Hey guys,

Need some veterans to chime in on this because I'm completely stumped and out of ideas at this point.

I’m running a 100% WH multilingual sports stats and forecasts site (scaled in 24 languages). No shady link building, no PBNs, totally clean profile (in my opinion). Everything was growing nicely until July 20.

Within a matter of hours, G decided to completely nuke my organic traffic. It wasn’t a slow bleed — it was a straight guillotine execution in a single morning.

The Damage:

  • Impressions: Went from 27k-30k/day down to around 400/day.
  • Rankings: Money keywords and generic terms went from page 1 straight to the shadow realm (page 4+ or completely gone).
The Weird Pattern:My brand queries are completely untouched. If you search the exact brand name, we still sit at #1-3 and get clicks. But every single generic term and almost all of our localized language folders (/es, /it, /ro, etc.) got wiped out. Even the oldest, most authoritative pages on the domain.

What I’ve checked so far:

  • GSC is clean: No manual actions, no security issues.
  • Still Indexed: I am not de-indexed. In fact, Googlebot is crawling the site more heavily now than before the drop (around 15k requests/day).
  • Tech is solid: robots.txt, canonicals, and reciprocal hreflang tags are all perfect. No accidental noindex tags.
  • No server downtime: Direct and social traffic remained steady, so it's strictly an organic Google drop.
The only change on my end:We pushed a purely front-end visual redesign later that same day (July 20). But I checked the raw server logs—the drop in organic hits had already started in the morning, hours before the new UI went live. URL structure and actual content stayed 100% identical anyway.

I know some SERP weather tools showed a spike around July 18-19, but a 98% drop in hours feels targeted.

My questions:

  1. Does this look like a stealth algorithmic penalty at the domain level, given that only brand terms survived?
  2. Has anyone taken a hit this hard and fast without a manual action and actually recovered?
  3. Should I just wait this out, or does a 98% overnight wipeout mean the domain is essentially burned in Google's eyes?
Any insights or similar experiences would be hugely appreciated.

It looks like an issue with "Shadow Banning"
Is your website built on WordPress?
Please check if a large amount of repetitive, low-quality spam content has been automatically generated recently. Have you reinforced your internal linking?

No, we don't use wordpress. I don't think that we have any new low-quality automatically generated content.

In that case, I suggest waiting a few days; it should recover automatically.
One of my websites experienced a similar issue back in 2023, and it returned to normal within a week.

This could be due to Google changing its search algorithm, or worse, you've been targeted by malicious activity.
