Indexing is my first check too. If search engines can't properly crawl and index the right pages, everything else content, links, and optimization—has a much smaller impact.
 
The first thing I check is whether important pages are being crawled and indexed correctly. If Google can't access or index your pages properly, everything else becomes much less effective.
 
I always start by checking whether the important pages are actually being indexed and if robots.txt or noindex tags are blocking anything by mistake. After that, I look at Core Web Vitals and crawl errors because they can affect both user experience and search performance.

Internal linking is my first check .Poor site statured often hidden pages.
 
I always check indexability first too. A quick look at robots.txt, noindex tags, and canonicals can save a lot of time because if pages aren't being indexed correctly, everything else is secondary.

I generally tends to see whether google is unneccessarily crawling pages which are not actually worth being crawled. Pages such as tag pages, filtered URLs and even archived pages are examples of pages which can waste crawl resources without offering any benefits at all. Cleaning up the pages and ensuring that high priority pages are crawlable has yielded better results for me than the constant quest for littlr improvements in speed.
