Is it possible to take down a FB private group?

How did you hear about that group. If you are still member then it is highly possible. But if you are not then it is quite tough since you don't have any proof of that.

You can mass report it if illegal items are sold there.
 
If they're openly selling prohibited stuff, eventually somebody reports it. The timeline is the part nobody can predict
 
If you are not an admin of the group, you cannot delete posts. If you see that the group has many violating posts, you can report the page.
 
If they're actually breaking Facebook's rules, the best option is to report it. Private groups can still be reviewed, but how long it takes really depends on Facebook.

Yeshh private groups can be reported even if they r violating facebook policies. it will be easier for the reporting bcuz there is enough evidence that they can submiit through access to the group but even without that the id number of the group can help inittiate an investigation.
