I added 20 new keywords to an existing campaign. Traffic increased, but conversions dropped 40%. CTR looks fine. Anyone experienced this?

Adding broad keywords can bring low-intent clicks. Try exact match or phrase match instead.

Check negative keywords, some new terms might be irrelevant or killing conversions.

Test new keywords in a separate ad group first before merging into main campaign.

Sometimes you just need to pause underperforming keywords and scale the winners slowly.

Sounds like some of those new keywords might be bringing in less-qualified traffic—try reviewing the search terms and pausing the low-performers.

Probably some of the new keywords are attracting less qualified traffic—try reviewing the search terms and trimming the ones that aren't converting.

Sounds like the new keywords might be too broad or less relevant—try refining them or adding more specific negative keywords to filter out the bad traffic.

Yeah, adding too many keywords too fast can dilute focus—try pausing the underperforming ones and refining your targeting to get back on track!

yeah, I think some new keywords are bringing the wrong traffic and you should check which keywords are not getting conversions and immediately pause them.

Everyone here is pointing at traffic quality, which is worth checking, but two other mechanisms fit your numbers better. If that campaign runs Smart Bidding, dropping 20 keywords in at once is a structural change that can push it back into learning, and Google's own docs say conversion rate dips while the system re-tests bids. The second is plain budget dilution the same daily budget now spreads across more keywords, so less of it lands on the ones that were already converting and total conversions fall even when nothing got worse. Before you start pausing things, separate conversion rate from conversion count. If your rate held and only the count dropped, that's budget maths, not junk traffic, and pausing keywords won't fix it.
