Which Technical SEO Fix Had the Biggest Impact on Your Site?

I am working on improving the technical SEO of my website, but there are so many things to focus on that it’s difficult to know what should be the priority.
I have seen recommendations about site speed, indexing issues, Core Web Vitals, internal structure, and other technical improvements.
I would like to know from your experience which technical SEO changes made the biggest impact on your website’s rankings or overall performance?

Improving site speed and fixing internal linking had the biggest impact for me. once google could crawl the site better and users got a faster experience the rankings started improving much faster.
 
From my experience, the biggest improvements usually come from resolving crawl and indexing problems first, since search engines need to access and index your pages before they can rank them. Once that's taken care of, optimizing Core Web Vitals, improving page speed, building a stronger internal linking structure, and removing duplicate or low value content can make a noticeable difference. A solid technical SEO foundation helps search engines crawl your site more efficiently and better understand your content.
 
The best technical SEO fix for me was making sure every important page was indexable and linked properly. Without good indexing, even the best content cannot perform well in search.
 
For me, improving internal linking had the biggest impact. Once I connected related pages properly and made it easier for search engines to discover important content, I noticed better crawling and ranking improvements without publishing a lot of new content.
 
For me, cleaning up duplicate and thin pages made one of the biggest differences. Once I removed low-value content and gave important pages a clear purpose, it became easier for search engines to understand what each page should rank for. After that, improvements to crawling and internal linking seemed to have a much stronger effect.

Site speed is the first you should fix. Internal linking and updating your content are the second and third.

Surprisingly, cleaning up unnecessary pages and fixing duplicate content gave me better results than chasing Core Web Vitals. Sometimes simple technical fixes have the biggest impact.
 
I would prioritize indexing and crawl issues first. If search engines can't properly crawl and index your pages, nothing else matters. After that, focus on internal linking and site speed.
 
best fix you can do now is to make sure to put your content in plain html, cause AI tools like gpt read your page raw html only, their crawlers do not run javascript at all :)

Usualy, the improvement is due to increased crawlability and site architecture. for myself, I have achieved more positive result from fixing internal linking nd removing poor performing page rather than from working on Core Web Vital.
 
Personally what improved my rankings was using the perfect Schema. it was a long time ago but i used to ignore it while building websites.

For me, fixing crawl and indexing issues had the biggest impact. Once Google could efficiently discover and index the right pages, rankings improved much faster than from speed tweaks alone.
 
Fixing indexing & crawl issues like no-index tags, bad canonicals & internal linking usually has the biggest impact far more than speed tweaks alone
 
Fixing crawl/indexation issues (especially removing noindex blocks and improving internal linking) had the biggest impact, leading to the fastest organic traffic gains.
 
Based on what's actually moving rankings this year, start with crawlability and indexing, since nothing else matters if Google can't crawl or index your pages. Then focus on Core Web Vitals (mainly LCP and INP) and mobile experience, since Google ranks based on your mobile site and any gap there hurts you directly.

After that, prioritize internal linking and site structure over sitemaps, and add schema markup since it now helps AI tools understand and cite your content too. If you can only do a few things: crawl/index first, then Core Web Vitals, then mobile, then internal linking, then schema.
 
Improving internal linking had the strongest impact on one of my sites, It helped search engines understand the content better and gave important pages more visibility without creating new backlink's.
 
A lot of people have already mentioned site speed and internal linking, so I'll throw out another one that often gets overlooked: keeping an eye on your 404 errors. This is especially important for eCommerce websites that are constantly adding, removing, or replacing products. Over time, those missing pages can add up to hundreds or even thousands of 404 errors, and if any of those pages were driving traffic or had valuable backlinks, you could be losing SEO value. Make it a habit to monitor those errors and redirect important pages when appropriate. I'd also make sure your website works just as well on mobile as it does on desktop. Many business owners only review the desktop version during development, but the majority of users now browse on their phones, so a fast, responsive, and functional mobile experience is just as important as anything else you do for SEO.
