I would say competitor analysis. Thats gem. Try to find what works for them definitely work for you.
Beginners usually concentrate on looking for ways to take shortcuts, but knowing why things work is more important.
SEO practices are constantly changing, and using outdated tactics without trying them yourself first could take up a great deal of your tym.
i believe the best strategy would be to study firstly the fundamentals and try out tactics on smaller projects.

What I would really concentrate on is how to evaluate the risks and rewards of using certain tactics rather than simply whether they works in terms of ranking pages. in most cases, if an approach helps you quickly improve your position but cannot be used for diagnuosis later, it would probably be worth learning from.

The greatest error made by people who believe in the effectiveness of black hat SEO is the way they view it. While black hat SEO should treated as a science of testing, they treat it as a series of tactics that may be successful or not depending on situations . For a time , a strategy that works great in one case may totally fail in another because the sites, competitors and other factors are different.
Another thing that i would suggest is learning how to read the results of an not successful test as well as a successful one. There are certain tactics that seems to work for several weeks but fail completely bcz you do not know what exactly caused the shift in variables. This kind of skill may be more important than learning some black hat techniqiues.

In my opinion one should learn about search engines before getting into black hat tactics. It is surprising how many new peoples kill their domains bcz of using techniques which are long dead.

Get your basics 10/10 first. Don't go for blackhat straight. Reason? because you might hurt your website in the process.
Web 2.0 blogs are the easiest backlinks and they are useful if built properly.
Work on building a brand through backlinks, don't spam.
Work on forums, show yourself as a jack of all trades in a forum but don't over indulge in topics.
