Why do some businesses ignore SEO even when they need it?

I have spoken with business owners who early need SEO but still refuse to invest in it In your experience, what are the biggest reasons businesses avoid SEO services? Is it lack of education, previous bad experiences, unrealistic expectations, or something else?

Most businesses want results. So the seo needs to be result oriented. They need guarantees if they gonna spend money. Some rather run ads then seo if you can't deliver results.

This is a major reason. Another reason is lack of experience/knowledge. Some aspects of SEO don't require paying more. Making the site SEO optimized and other littles fixes that they could do on their own if they want to spend. Many don't.

Some focus more on how their site looks.

most business owners aren't against seo itself—they just don't see a clear roi upfront if they can't connect the investment to revenue they tend to postpone it even when they need it

If I need to turn a project into income quickly, I usually don’t rely on SEO at the beginning because it takes time and results are not always predictable.
In one of my service projects I used Google Ads instead. The average conversion cost was around $2.2, with a total spend of about $120. That campaign generated a bit over $1000 in revenue over 3 months, plus clients are still with me today. So for me, paid traffic works much better when I need fast results.
But it really depends on the niche.
In my automotive news website SEO is the main strategy. After improving internal linking and building proper topic clusters, the average position improved from 27.3 to 8.1, and CTR increased from 1.1% to 2.2%. That’s what made the difference in organic growth.
So my conclusion is simple — there is no universal approach. For service-based businesses speed matters more, so paid ads and partnerships work best. For informational projects, SEO and long-term structure are essential.

business owners don’t fully understand how SEO compounds over time, so they expect immediate returns like ads. Another big factor is unrealistic expectations they want top rankings fast without seeing the long-term process behind it.

Mostly unrealistic expectation and wanting instant result.

Some business owners are more comfortable spending on ads because the results feel more immediate than SEO.

in my experience it’s mostly a mix of bad past experiences and unrealistic expectations. a lot of owners hear “seo = instant results” or they got burned by cheap low-quality work, so they lump all seo together. then fear/cashflow makes them delay it, even if they know it matters.

A lot of it comes down to trust, many business owners have been burned by agencies promising page one rankings so they become skeptical of the whole industry. Others expect SEO to deliver instant results like paid ads and when they hear it takes months they lose interest, some also dont realize how much business theyre leaving on the table until competitors start outranking them.

Alot of business owners are from the older generation of newspaper ads
Which no longer exists
They don't understand what is meant by seo

Lack of SEO knowledge makes many businesses underestimate it's long-term value.

From my experience working with contractors and other business owners who aren't very internet savvy, a lot of them either don't get many leads from SEO as it is, so they assume they don't need it, or they're simply tired of hearing about it altogether.

The reality is these guys get hundreds, if not thousands, of calls and emails from SEO companies promising them the world. Then they're told it'll take 6–8 months before they really start seeing results. Honestly, I probably wouldn't be excited to buy into that either.

What I've found works best is explaining SEO in a way that relates to their everyday life. I always tell them, "When I need a plumber or a roofer, I'm not scrolling through Facebook or looking for someone doing a TikTok dance. I go to Google, search for what I need, and usually click one of the first few results." That example tends to make it click because it's exactly how they find services themselves.

That said, you still have to get them to listen first. Building a personal connection and earning a little trust before jumping into the SEO conversation usually goes a long way toward leading with a sales pitch.

In my experience, it's usually because SEO takes time and many businesses expect quick results. Previous bad experiences with low-quality providers also make them hesitant.

Biggest reason I've seen bad past experience with agencies that promised fast results and delivered nothing SEO takes time and that mismatch kills trust fast

I think the biggest issue is a timeframe. To do seo you have to invest for quite some time without any income that you can calculate.

Half of it is just SEO's own marketing problem — we've spent a decade promising "exponential growth" and delivering "meaningful progress in Q3," so business owners hear "SEO" and their brain translates it to "expensive patience."

I hear the same story - they tried to pay an agency, but got not exactly viable results.

This would apply also to many of those, that are actually in the know, and have basic SEO optimization on their site already.
