Do you ever feel like your Reddit post fits the topic but not the community ?

I have noticed that sometimes I find a subreddit that looks perfect for my posts but after reading the comments and recent discussions, I start feeling that my post does not really match the community.

The topic is relevant but the way people interact there is completely different from what I expected.

I have ended up deleting a few drafts because I was not sure they would fit even though they followed the rules.

Has anyone else experienced this?
How do you decide if a subreddit is the right place for your post before you publish it?

Yes, I have also experienced it sometime. Before posting in a subreddit, I spend a few minutes reading the recent post or comments of the community. The subreddit rules tell you what is allowed, but the way people are interacting in that community tells you what people actually engage with. For you matching that is also important as well as following the rules.

honestly that gut feeling you get is usually right. if a post makes you hesitate even when it follows every rule, the community has already told you something. ive deleted drafts for the same reason and looking back most of them would have flopped or got buried anyway.

one thing that helped me is sorting by top posts of the past month instead of just reading new. new shows you whats allowed, top shows you what the community actually rewards. sometimes a sub technically allows your topic but the stuff that gets traction is a totally different format or tone, and thats the real signal.

also worth checking how mods handle the gray area posts... like are removed posts visible, do mods comment, that kinda thing. tells you how strict the vibe really is vs what the sidebar says. and yeah leaving a couple comments first never hurts, you learn the room faster than just lurking imo.

I've done that too. If it doesn't feel like a good fit, I just don't post it there. I usually read a few recent posts first to see how people interact.

Yes, it happens with me. If I am unsure, I generally comment in that subreddit for a while before posting. It gives me a better feel for how the community responds and whether my post will fit in or not.

Yes this happens often because every subreddit has its own style tone and community culture beyond just the posted topic rules.

this is because each subreddit has its own tone, rules and type of content people looking for.

I check what gets upvoted and how people respond to similar posts. That usually tells me if it's the right fit.

Yes, I have experienced that too. Before posting, I usually spend some time in reading the top posts and recent comments. It gives me a better idea about what the community likes and whether my post will fit in it or not.
