It depends on your site, but a combination usually works.
Where possible though, evergreen content will give you the biggest bang for your buck.
Trending content will give you the best short term boost, but can also become obselete pretty quickly.

I focus mostly on evergreen content because it brings consistent long-term traffic. Trend content is useful for quick traffic spikes, but it usually fades fast.
A mix of both works best, but evergreen content is the stronger long-term strategy in my opinion.

I’ve found it way easier to stay sane by picking one main content style as my base and letting the rest fill in the gaps. Evergreen stuff keeps working even on days when I forget my site exists, and then I toss in trends when I feel like catching a quick wave. If you batch topics by type, it also makes planning way less of a headache.

I usually create content related to trends, which is easier to reach the audience. Although not sustainable, if I have a recommended niche, I can make quite a lot of money with this type of content.

I think informational and evergreen content usually performs best like fitness, recipes and travel blogs. it gives quick traffic on your blogs.

If you're looking to keep folks coming back for more, I've always found that tweaking older evergreen posts every few months with new stats or FAQs gives them a fresh boost on Google. Especially these days in 2026, a quick update here and there makes sure they don’t gather cobwebs and stay ahead of your competition. I usually batch my updates to save time so it doesn’t eat into creating new stuff.
I no longer classify content as evergreen or trending. I consider if it solves a problem people have at the moment they are ready to act. Those posts tends to get less visitors than broad guides bt convert much better and stay useful for a long time.
I would focus on content that is easy to update rather than trying to predict what will perform best forever. A gud article you update every few months can have a longer shelf life than trending posts or evergreen pieces that never get touched again.

I spend most of my time writing evergreen content because it brings in steady traffic for years. It creates a solid foundation for your site so you do not have to constantly write new posts to survive.

I think of trending content as the spark, and evergreen content as the foundation. Trends can bring in a quick influx of vissitors but it is the evergreen posts that keep a site growing over the long haul. If I was to choose one as a beginner I would put more effort into evergreen content and add trends when they are genuinely fittiing my niche.
