How do you detect AI SLOP?

Many of the viral posts you’ve come across this year were probably written with AI, or let's rephrase that written "with the help" of AI tools.

The reason I'm talking about this is because it has created a strange reaction online, where almost anything well-written is now labelled as “AI slop.”

The term itself is being used very loosely.

In reality, there is a big difference between low-effort AI-generated content and AI-assisted writing.

Low-effort content usually involves copying prompts directly into a tool and publishing the output without thought, editing, or experience behind it.

AI-assisted writing is different. It involves using AI to refine structure, improve clarity, organise ideas, or speed up execution while still keeping the original thinking human-led.

Personally, I use AI more as a support tool than a replacement. It helps me communicate ideas more clearly, but it doesn’t create the ideas for me.

The thinking, experience, and perspective still come from the person.

That distinction is important, because dismissing everything as “AI slop” ignores how most modern tools are actually being used in practice.

I get what you're trying to say, but the irony here is this post itself reads like it was written with AI lol. : D

If we're talking about authenticity, the best way to actually prove that point is to just write it yourself. Share your own thoughts, your own experiences, your own opinions instead of letting AI structure the whole message for you.

Nothing wrong with using AI for grammar, formatting, or polishing things up a bit. The problem is when people let AI do all the thinking for them. That's when it starts feeling generic.

If you want people to value human perspective, then lead by example. Use your own mind, write in your own voice, and give your own take instead of relying on AI to write it for you.

The biggest tell is the level of punctuation people use.

Suddenly everyone is using commas and proper punctuation, which is a big tip-off.

AIs are blah blah blah generators. Tons of bullshit. Useless generic garbage. They talk like some boring politicians who can talk 30 minutes and they don't say anything, a bunch of blah blah blah

The AI slop label got lazy fast, agree with that part. But @CyHead has a point that kinda proves the whole thread wrong... punctuation isnt a tell of anything except that someone bothered. Plenty of humans use commas.

Where I land is closer to @Third party. Nobody in the wild is checking if you used a tool, they're reacting to whether the thing said anything. You can write 100% by hand and still produce generic advice thats been posted a thousand times. And you can run something through AI and still have it be sharp because the take underneath was yours.

The @Ben Arthur "just write it yourself to prove it" thing sounds good but honestly people will call it slop anyway the second it reads clean. That reaction isnt about process, its a vibe check people apply after the fact. So chasing their approval by writing raw is a losing game imo. Just make the point actually worth reading and let it be.

AI slop is easy to identify with long dashes, bullet points, authoritative tone as if it's the universal truth, a bottom line at the end asking questions to encourage discussion, strong vocabulary, proper grammar & punctuation, etc. It's the reason why so many people who write in 3rd person using proper grammar & punctuation trigger AI filters.

Lol did you read where I said this post itself was AI assisted?

I don't think you did. Also, do you know about having a certain voice in writing? You may love a narrative style of writing but that doesn't make other voices AI simply because it doesn't sound like yours.

AI SLOP has gone beyond em dashes nowadays mate. Writing without emotions is the only way to detect pure AI written contents. We have brilliant minds and people with very sharp sense of reasoning.

Would you say because AI came to be that such brilliance should be classified as cooked up by AI?

We trained AI and not the other way, therefore the words AI use, were added by Humans!

The biggest tell is the level of punctuation people use.

For me, its not about whether AI was used, its about whether the content adds real value If a post sounds generic repeats the same advice and lacks personal experience that's what I consider AI slop not simply using AI to help with writing
Thank you for this. Most people just argue baseless for the sake of it. I see many people in comments just screaming AI slops without actually reading to get the message of writers.

You can't detect AI like that. Using AI is to correct grammatical errors and use appropriate Punctuation, is that not the benefit of the tool? What are you saying? That people shouldn't use AI to assist with errors and information? What then is AI for?
Imagine someone who called himself a prolific writer publishing a book and you detect jargons and typos, you would ignore the fact that they are human and ask why a pro writer couldn't detect such errors, wouldn't you?

Your biggest tell is no tell.
AI writing is emotionless, neutral and no perspective. That is how to know AI SLOP.

Good point, I think the real tell is wether the piece has a specific pov or just states generic facts everyone allready knows. AI-assisted writing still has an opinon behind it, slop usualy doesnt.

You're absolutely right. Thank you for your thoughts contribution mate.

The generic AI responses have a template of being trying to over supportive and that same repetitive blueprint and format of answering something you could easily identify after reading few lines.

writing assist look way more natural because main structure is human made while rest done by AI is just finishing touches.

Nonsense, when people like you use clankers to manipulate the topic, and thirst up noobs with your bs claims and lack of experiance. People here don't care about detecting ai slop, they are smart at it, they want methods and processes to pay the bills, and I doubt you got any?

@YoursTruLee pls use multi-quote when responding. Your other posts are following the same pattern.
Other posts are following same pattern? How do you mean mate?

Yes, someone who understands. Thank you

I thought I knew you from somewhere. A club of people who lack all of the things you listed. Since Rudeness is your forte, why not scroll and save yourself from more display of unintelligible comments.

Well said mate, absolutely brilliant take. Honestly, this post was inspired after coming across educational contents across platforms being labelled as AI SLOP by some persons who do not even read the content for the message it carries.

Some of these individuals just have nothing else to contribute on a platform but are on every post watering down work of writers and marketers by calling it "Slop".

And it might look harmless but what happens to those whose feelings are hurt by such remarks?

I generally have decent spelling and punctuation. I write more than just as short communication. Like, I recreationally write and help others edit their long form fiction. I use emdashes and colons, when I think they make the thought I'm trying to express more digestible.

Recently, a friend of mine who is a college student asked me if I was writing my texts with chat gpt and I was shook.

At the same time, I've prompted LLMs down to removing all punctuation, misspelling every other word, and being defiant and hateful.

At this point, I think the only tactic for this particular issue is to wait out the knee jerk prejudices. People don't know. And sooner or later it'll be impossible to know, either because of more widespread adoption of the tools or the tools becoming more sophisticated at sounding natural.

I just think it's main character syndrome cos I can't explain the "this is AI" policing on contents when you can just get value from it.

I mean, there is a point where I feel kind of like "okay thanks, now I know what grok has to say. But I wasn't talking to grok. I was talking to you." Anyone can go to any one of the LLMs and have their own chat with it, but they come to places like this wanting to talk to people. So in that way I can empathize with some of the visceral reactions.

I'm just not going to be narrow minded enough to assume I know whether that person asked the llm to reply for them, or instead that person asked the llm to translate their block of Telugu into English and understandably lacks the command of English needed to modify the writing style afterwards.

Either way, there are real AI menaces out there to complain about instead. Several times a day for my work I have to argue with an AI on the phone, that it would be more efficient for it to just forward me to a human, because it has insufficient privileges to solve my issue anyway. Takes about 5 minutes each time. It actually argues with me. And sometimes I think it only agrees to forward me to a human after I actually start cussing at it. That's what I call AI slop.

Thank you. Yes you have a broad thinking and I love it. And I agree we do have annoying AI slops.
