Article directories. 2010 to 2012 I fed EzineArticles and its cousins more spun content than I want to admit, hundreds of hours for links that Panda turned to dust.
The lesson stuck though -> if a link costs nothing to get, that's exactly what it passes. Every shortcut channel since (web 2.0s, mass guest post farms, cheap edit marketplaces) has died the same death, just slower.

i spent too much time building low quality backlinks just to increase the numbers a handful of relevant contextual links ended up doing far more than hundreds of weak ones
For me, it was obsessing over small on page SEO adjustments. The greatest improvements came from a better way to organize the content, more solid internal links, and publishing more full-bodied articles. Those shifts kept delivering a lot more impact than endlessly tweaking headings or nudging keyword density.

chasing every algo update on twitter instead of just building stuff that works, pure anxiety with zero payoff
For me, it was actually all about trying to achieve perfect keyword density and tweaking my meta tags all the time. Not too much progress.
My big breakthrough came from when I deciided to stop doing that and start working on internal linking and updating existing content instead.

Honestly, chasing tiny on-page tweaks was probably my biggest time sink too. Things like obsessing over meta tags, keyword density, or small copy changes rarely moved rankings much.
What made a bigger difference later was focusing on content structure, internal linking, and actually covering topics properly instead of polishing small details endlessly.

Spending hours manually spinning thousands of web 2.0 articles and blasting automated tier two profiles was my biggest waste. Google started filtering out those footprints so fast that the links barely even indexed, let alone moved the needle. Shifting that energy toward core technical structure yielded much better long term growth.

for me, the biggest waste of time was building low-quality backlinks, late i realized that focusing on high quality content, user intent, technical seo, and site structure delivers much better results.

Yeah same here that's why I usually manually outreach to only high authoritative websites now and try to get free backlinks before even paying.
